Presentation transcript:

Animation from 1900-1950

1900- 1910 Early Animation pioneers During this period, the first film to feature animation “The Enchanted Drawing” was released. And the same man who made “The Enchanted Drawing” released “Humorous Phases of Funny Faces” Also some guy named Walt Disney was born in this period… just saying…

1911 – 1920 Early Animation Studios During this time, Animation Studios started to pop up. Two examples being ; Universal Pictures (better known as Universal Studios) , and Laugh-O-Gram Studio, Walt Disney’s first animated venture. It was short-lived. And animation had started to get popular. Also, the use of cells had been industrialized. And later in this period, the process had been improved.

1921 - 1930 Early Sound During this period, After Walt Disney made the first Mikey Mouse cartoon, he discusses the idea of making the 2nd Mickey cartoon with sound with the studio staff. Then Wilfred Jackson (one of Walt Disney’s staff) comes up with the idea of making an exposure sheet and then creates the "Bar Sheet" for transcribing the music and breaking it down into frames for better synchronization. Walt, Jackson, Roy, Cannon and UB do a live performance of the sound effects to a short section of the "Steamboat Willie" cartoon that is in mid-production. Disney has another screening like the first but this time with the entire film completed. Walt leaves for NY, and meets Pat A. Powers who helps get the Steamboat sound recorded. Walt has the 1st recording session which turns out to be a disaster. After adding a bouncing ball to the corner of the film to better assist in the timing of the sound, the 2nd recording session is a complete success. After the release of "Steamboat Willie", Van Beuren announces that all their new cartoons would be produced with sound.

1931 – 1940 More Recognition Animation was starting to be recognized even more because in this period, Oscars are awarded for animated short cartoons at the Academy Awards in 1932.
