CIVITAS: The Brighton & Hove Experience The challenges, benefits and future potential of transport smartcards First Annual Sustainable Mobility Convention 21 September 2010 Park Plaza Hotel, London Victoria Pat Stringer, Commercial Manager Brighton & Hove Bus Company

Background London Oyster card System has revolutionised travel by public transport within greater London. There is a need and demand to replicate this elsewhere in the UK. Brighton & Hove is a great place to do this – 50 miles/50 minutes from London, large commuter population, significant and continually growing bus and rail usage. Brighton & Hove – bus company and main train company in common ownership – the Go-Ahead Group plc

Where are we in Brighton & Hove..... Initial discussions started a few years ago Current ticketing provider couldn’t come up with the goods that we wanted Local rail franchise was re-let and awarded June 2009 to commence in September 2009 UK Government decided ITSO would be a national standard for smartcards All = delays!

Where are we in Brighton & Hove..... (2) First test ticket machine with us Smartcard producing equipment will be with us beginning of October Rest of machines delivered from November to December Commence testing early 2011 – staff Roll out spring 2011, commence with Annual tickets Integrate with trains and Pay As You Go – from 2012

Challenges...... Dealing with governments and other external bodies – ITSO etc Necessity of getting a system that you want – not just simply what suppliers can provide! IT Infrastructure People Cost! Testing Needs 100% commitment to making it work!

Benefits...... Security Better understanding of customers Faster boarding times – software and education is the key! Do away with cash/change Easy for customers to use – don’t even have to take smartcard out of purse/wallet Marketeers dream!

Future Potential........ National – ITSO – all bus and train companies? Add other products to smartcard – Brighton & Hove Albion Mobile – have to power phone! Bank card – smart chip inside? Not properly tested yet Contact less – don’t have to swipe on/off or in/out

Summary...... It is the future – it has to be! Possibilities endless Lots of hard work Where will we be in 10 years? Bring it on!

Thank you! Pat Stringer, Commercial Manager Brighton & Hove Bus Company Pat.Stringer@buses.co.uk www.buses.co.uk
