Phrases Get out your laptops and pull up the worksheet. I will give you 10 minutes to complete it. If you are finished, read LotF.

A Work of Artifice Symbolism in Poetry

Symbolism Evaluation Open a blank Google Doc and title it, “ Symbolism Evaluation”. Analyze the poem for symbolism. Write down the at least 5 words from the poem and the connotative meanings from the text. When you have finished, write one sentence explaining the main idea of the poem. How did symbolism play a role in your understanding of the poem?

Now that you have read it… Create your own poem based off of “A Work of Artifice”. In the original, the poem’s point of view is through the gardener’s eyes; I want you to create a poem that is taken from the aspect of the “bonsai tree.” Underline the words that you use to illustrate symbolism and define their figurative meaning below.

Lord of the Flies Time Take out your LotF book and read. This is a good time to answer the study guide questions and annotate. Based on our lecture, annotate for symbolism in LotF.

Closure - 3,2,1 Write: 3 things you learned about symbolism today. 2 examples of Gerund phrases. 1 question you have regarding the lecture.
