Component 2: Writing Types of questions

A discussion is being held in your class on the subject of how to deal with teenage crime. You have to present your views on the subject. Write what you will say. A local businessman has proposed holding a music festival in a nearby field. Write a letter to your local newspaper with your views about the idea. A large sum of money is to be spent on the area where you live. The council has suggested the money should be spent on one of these: A sports centre An arts centre A science and technology centre The council is asking for the views of local people. Write your letter to the council, explaining your views and persuading them to adopt your ideas. Write a review of a film you have recently watched or a game you have bought and played. Your review will be published in a magazine called Today’s Teens. Write a lively article for a teenage magazine about the problems teenagers face when growing up. Write a speech persuading people that fireworks should be banned. Write a report to your school governors on the facilities available in your school canteen.

A lot of older people don’t use computers or the internet either because they don’t see any value in them or because they’re afraid of modern technology. You have been asked to give a talk to a group of older people to persuade them to use computers and the internet. A friend has decided to get a tattoo for his/her birthday. Write a letter to your friend giving your thoughts about his/her decision. Write a leaflet persuading teenagers to adopt a healthy lifestyle. Write a travel guide for an attraction in your area to encourage visitors. Write an article on a great place for a day out. Write a letter of complaint to a train company following a bad train journey. Your local community centre is advertising for an assistant to help deliver activities for young people in the area. Write a letter of application for the position. ALWAYS REMEMBER: PURPOSE, AUDIENCE, FORMAT PURPOSE – WHY ARE YOU WRITING? AUDIENCE – WHO ARE YOU WRITING TO/FOR? FORMAT – WHAT STRUCTURE SHOULD YOUR WRITING TAKE?
