Merrylee Parents Council merryleeprimarypc.org

Your Parent Council A Parent Council or Forum is a body which: enables parents to meet, share ideas and feed back to the school. gives parents a voice and enables them to contribute to school decision making. helps develop a partnership between parents and school.

We can make a difference! Over the years the Parent Council have: Consulted with the Education Department on plans for the school building and again for the extension. Developed a healthy eating policy and prevented Cordia introducing a tuck shop – one of few primary schools that don’t have one. Successfully lobbied to have railings fitted along the pavement outside the school and nursery, increasing safety for our children travelling to and from school. Obtained a grant to add a path and gate, improving access to the school. Presented parent’s concerns on issues that impact on families such as changes to breakfast club provision, changes to the school catchment, the new absence reporting system and many more.

In the last year we have Surveyed all parents on road safety concerns, putting together a report for local councillors to work together to improve road safety. A new notice-board will shortly be fitted at the rear entrance to the school Created a new ‘Parent Handbook’, an informal guide to the school for new parents, by parents. Worked with the school to look at ways of improving communication, resulting in the very successful text messaging system. Used parent power to push for a refit of the Infant School toilets, making them more accessible to our little Primary 1’s.

Parent Council focus for this year Homework policy consultation Governance review – consultation on how Scottish Education is run National Improvement Framework - Standardised assessments Inclusion – Cost of the School Day, consideration of single parent families, different faiths and culture, ESOL Improvements to the school access paths Road Safety survey report to be issued and the sub Committee will continue to work with local councillors
