Winding and Misc Tests update In progress now (second 200mm lg Winding Test Mandrel) : Slight modification to drive cog is required due to machining error at Mandrel upstream end. Winding of cooling lines onto Mandrel will then proceed. Up Next: Brazing of the above completed assy. Lower priority, but still on the list: Twist a length of actual cross-section to failure for a measure of the margin of safety and maximum torque requirements. Bend samples of actual cross-section into required configurations. Section samples to inspect for internal distortion shapes and smoothness of transitions. LARP LHC PHASE II COLL RC1 TESTS - S. Braze Test update and plan forward In the Queue at the Braze Shop: Cu-Mo Hub-Shaft Brazing is next up for the braze shop (minor modifications are anticipated for proper braze clearances). Should have brazing completed by next week. Assy. will be sectioned for microscopic inspection of the copper grain boundaries at joint. Still waiting: 1st Braze Test Assembly has been re-scheduled to late March for the vacuum bake and pump down testing. Full Size Single Jaw Thermal Test Hardware Progress Jaw 1/4 sections (qty 24) now at SLAC require slight modifications for braze gap requirements. Full length Mandrel in fabrication at local vendor. Due 07 March 07. Central bore machining of Mandrel on hold pending Mo-Cu Hub braze test results. Power Supplies and Ground Fault equipment is mounted in rack. RC1 Design progress cont’d Image Current Plate Design. Present RF spring loading requirements of a few 10s of grams per finger cause excessive deflection of the tie-rod portions of the Image Current Plate. Tie-Rods LARP LHC PHASE II COLL RC1 TESTS - S. Lundgren 07 Mar 2007 No 12 /15

RC1 Design progress cont’d Challenges we face are the complexity of water cooling the tie-rods and dealing with the magnitude of above deflections. Pre-machining the opposite curvature into the part may work but other options could be less difficult/costly to implement. Reducing spring loading, if possible, in areas farther from the beam would help. Different RF spring configurations are being explored. A tie-rod less design is proposed. Original transition configuration (hourglass shape) is being re-considered as well. As a result some RF and Image Current questions arise so.. expert advice is needed.
