Presentation transcript:

Warm Up: Read the following sentences Warm Up: Read the following sentences. Identify each as simple, compound, complex, and compound complex. Explain each answer. The dog chased the ball. After the dog caught the ball, he brought it back to his owner, and he waited for her to throw it again. The owner threw it when she saw her dog was ready She only pretended to throw the ball, but the dog took off at full speed.

Simple The dog chased the ball. A simple sentence has the most basic elements that make it a sentence: a subject, a verb, and a completed thought. The dog chased the ball.

Compound A compound sentence refers to a sentence made up of two independent clauses (or complete sentences) connected to one another with a coordinating conjunction. She only pretended to throw the ball, but the dog took off at full speed.

Complex The owner threw it when she saw her dog was ready A complex sentence is made up of an independent clause and one or more dependent clauses connected to it. The owner threw it when she saw her dog was ready

Compound-Complex A compound-complex sentence is made up of two independent clauses that are connected by a fan boy and one or more dependent clauses. After the dog caught the ball, he brought it back to his owner, and he waited for her to throw it again.

Knowing this, try once more: When the sun rises, I wake up naturally. I am normally a morning person, but I find it difficult to get up before the sun. Coffee has become a key part in my morning routine. I find that I am only a morning person these days after I have had my morning coffee, but I guess that’s not so uncommon.

Please take out your Rudy Character Chart

Chapter Title Act of Rebellion Reason for Rebelling Textual Evidence “Arrival on Himmel Street” Rudy decides to be friends with Liesel and to be friendly with girls in general. He likes girls and, even more than this, likes the idea of doing what everyone else is afraid to do “He’s the boy who refuses to fear the opposite sex, purely because everyone else embraces that particular fear, and he’s the type who is unafraid to make that decision” (49). “The Jesse Owens Incident”   “The Heavyweight Champion of the School-Yard”

Chapter Title Act of Rebellion Reason for Rebelling Textual Evidence “The Attributes of Summer”   “The Aryan Shopkeeper” .

Chapter Title Act of Rebellion Reason for Rebelling Textual Evidence “Rudy’s Youth”   “The Losers” “The Whistler and the Shoes” “Three Acts of Stupidity by Rudy Steiner”

Character Analysis This is when a reader analyzes (or closely studies) a character and makes note of how the author uses characterization to convey a truth about life or human nature.

Characterization Character’s physical appearance Character’s words Character’s actions Character’s thoughts (only sometimes applicable) How others react to that character

Character’s physical appearance Character’s words Character’s actions Using your homework last night and your knowledge of Rudy Steiner, work with a partner to explain the following about Rudy. Character’s physical appearance Character’s words Character’s actions Character’s thoughts (only sometimes applicable) How others react to that character

Turn and talk: how is characterization tied to theme? Theme: the main message that the author is trying to send to the reader about life or human nature

What theme does Zusak express through Rudy’s character? Take a minute to write out one truth about life or human nature Zusak expresses through the character of Rudy Steiner

Turn and share your theme with a partner Check: does your partner’s theme express a truth about human nature or life? Consider the theme you expanded on in your picture book

Turn your theme into a thesis statement If you were to write a paper arguing that Zusak has written the character of Rudy in order to express that theme, what would your thesis statement be? Ensure you include: The author’s name The theme you are asserting he proves What about Rudy’s characterization allows him to prove that For example: Through the way Steven begins to make more responsible actions that focus on the well-being others rather than himself after his brother’s diagnosis, Sonnenblick asserts that tragedy enables young people to grow into more conscientious responsible adults.
