INFORM The author informs, reports and explains. Example Prompt: Explain the Milky Way solar system and corresponding planets. INFORM

The author informs, reports, explains and tells why. Example Prompt: Friendship is essential. Explain why a true friend is crucial. INFORM AND TELL WHY

The author lists steps in numerical or chronological order and includes a measureable product. Example Prompt: Indicate how to go from the classroom to the library. PROCEDURAL

The author gives ways of doing something abstract The author gives ways of doing something abstract. It does not have to be given in any specific order, but there does need to be a goal. Example Prompt: Explain how to maintain a positive school environment. MASKED

CLASSIFY The author explains two sides of one item. Example Prompt: Write an essay about the advantages and disadvantages of friendship. CLASSIFY

The author explains how two items are alike and different. Example Prompt: Compare and contrast texting to emailing someone. COMPARE & CONTRAST
