Common vs. Proper A common noun is a general name for a person, place, thing, or idea and is not capitalized. A proper noun is the specific name of a particular person, place, thing, or idea and is always capitalized. List some common and proper nouns.

Concrete vs. Abstract A concrete noun names an object that can be seen, heard, smelled, touched, or tasted. *Name common nouns in the classroom. An abstract noun names an idea, quality, or state. (Can’t be touched). * Beauty, wealth, liberty, peace, etc.

Singular vs. Plural Singular nouns refer to one person, place, thing, or idea. Plural nouns refer to more than one person, place, thing, or idea. Give plural nouns for the following: * fish * pony * child

Collective A collective noun refers to a group of people or things and is singular. * crowd * audience * staff Can you think of any more collective nouns?

Compound A compound noun is made up of two or more words and it may be written as one word, separate words, or as hyphenated words. * son-in-law * playground

In your notes write… A person, place, thing, idea, quality or state of mind (-age, -tion, -ment, -ness, -ship, -dom) Can be made plural (animal – animals) Can become possessive with ‘s (the student’s bag) *when it’s possessive, it becomes an ADJ. Can become an ADJ if you put another NOUN after it (dog fight, couch potato) - Can put the in front of it and it will make sense.
