Greek Leadership Summit 2013 Town Hall Greek Leadership Summit 2013

Last year (and last fall) what one person was doing- Overall operations, Greek awards, officer inaugurations, communicate with headquarters', Advising 23 council officers, communicate with alumni and grad chapters Advising two honor societies, coordinate marketing, assess everything, Greek week Work with chapter advisors, vendor management, scholarship programming, Manage electronic resources, consultant visits, manage and develop budgets Recruitment strategies and advising, communicate with parents, Conference participation, advocate and publicize Greek achievements Preview weekend, attend Greek and university events as needed Preview days, distribute judicial/values cases for consideration as needed Orientation, major speakers, housing research and deliberatio s Development efforts, composite grade report and grade checks, roster updating Strategic planning,

Who responded 442 respondents (240 Greek) 70% women 30% men Roughly evenly split from soph-junior 19-21

Recruiting 45% of respondents participated in formal recruitment activities Top reasons for not partaking include finance, family, time/process/stereotype s Friends/orientation/pub lications top means of learning about Greeks

Other recruitment data Why join? Connections Participation breakdown 52% freshmen, 23% sophomore, 13% junior, 11% senior 85% of pool agrees recruitment great way to meet people Reservations in joining include, expense, portrayal in recruitment did not play out post recruitment, lack of parent knowledge, time commitment, stereotypes Top reasons people quit include academics, finance, and disagreement with org policies 46% do it within 1 month and 64% do not regret it

Chapter perceptions Chapters are portrayed as, social clubs Memberships portrayed as wide open (58%), Samford connections (20%), other (22%) 44% have no knowledge of Greek Life prior to exposure at Samford Alcohol plays a high role in fraternities (55%) and a high roll in sororities (19%, no opinion 43%) Fraternities impact academics 22% yes, 54% no opinion Sororities impact academics 50% yes, 43% no opinion Worth the cost? 44% yes, 43% no Have you been discouraged from participating? 63% yes, 27% no Are Greeks celebrated at Samford? 69% yes, 14% no Does Samford have a positive view of Greeks? 39% yes, 35% no

What does this tell us? Need to advance our message pre- orientation Families must be educated as well Core values are not 100% incorporated in actions Different aspects we need to better emphasize academics, faith engagement, social events without alcohol How can we better navigate finances? Consistent messaging from community through to organizations
