Reading Independent Reading – Daily – Reading Logs 2nd to 3rd grade – a shift from fluency and story elements to critical thinking and higher level reading comprehension skills. Writing about reading is more heavily emphasized. Whole Group students will… Use the theme reader to learn specific reading skills (fact/opinion, cause/effect, main idea, etc.) Use the theme reader to learn specific reading strategies (predicting, inferring, connecting, visualizing, etc.) Small Guided Reading Groups - Children with similar reading abilities will work with books at their instructional level. The focus will be on applying skills and strategies learned during the whole group portion of the lesson. Although in different groups, all children will read stories that relate to a common theme (Heroes, Science at Play, etc.) and practice the same skills and strategies. Writing It’s all about the topic!
