Optical Illusions

What is wrong? The advertisement appears normal Read it carefully STROOP Effect You don’t realize the image is wrong We automatically read the correct response We don’t pay attention to exactly what is written

Focus your sight on the parallel lines Are they parallel?

Parallel Lines Although they don’t appear straight, they are parallel The sight is deceiving The thin black lines in the background that go out of the black circle provoke an illusion It appears that the thick, purple lines are curving near the black center

What do you see? Some people see an old woman or a young lady What you see depends on your expectations and your prior knowledge

Do you see a cube even though it is formed by circles that are separated from one another? Why? Psychologists say because the elements line up in a straight line we view them as a unique whole even though they are separate from one another

What do you see? A skull in the foreground A romantic scene in the background In the center, there is a couple of lovers declaring love for one another Double image effect

Different Perspectives Look at the window Who’s perspective is correct? The artist creates a double perspective They are both possible. It depends on how you look at the image.

What are they building? It is not clear if they are building a roof, terrace, or floor. Also, there are people watching from the top. How are they doing this?

Which red dot is bigger? They are both the same. What makes us interpret falsely are the circles around it. We compare the red circle with the circles on the outside making it appear bigger or smaller

Is the road level? The road appears level but it leads to the first floor. How is this possible? Our sight is deceiving us

Pay close attention… We see a praying priest But what happens when we turn it upside down?

Can you find nine hidden people in this image?

Solution 1) Face in the sky. 2) Profile of a face in the sky. 3) Profile of a face in the sky. 4 ) Profile of a face in the sky. 5) Profile of a face in the sky. 6) Woman in a long skirt. 7) Child in the arms of that woman. 8) Old man in a hat and with a white beard. 9) Profile of a big face formed by an arch, the woman and the old man… and a dog that is his hand resting on his chest.

What do you see? A vase The profile of two men

In this piece by Salvador Dalí, we see a group of people There is also a portrait of Voltaire in the foreground. The faces of two women form his eyes.

Which animal do you see? A rabbit or a duck?

Steps These two guys are sitting on different steps Is this possible?

Parallel lines These lines don’t appear to be parallel but they are The position of the black squares are responsible for this optical illusion

What do you think are the elephant’s real legs? It is very easy to be confused by this by this picture

Look carefully! Look at the center line Which line is longer? The one on the right appears longer In reality, they are the same length

What do you see? This is an image of a woman in black and white There is also a man playing the saxophone Can you see him?

Triangle This triangle could never exist in reality It’s sides are impossible to construct in 3D

Can you see both versions? At first, it appears to be a naked woman with her left arm outstretched In the second image you can see the inside of a room where a cat is sitting, there is a shelf with a bottle and plant, and there are clothes hanging outside

How many columns are there? There are two or maybe three

Staircases Is the staircase right-side-up, or up-side- down? Or, are you looking at the steps from below?

Parallel Lines Are these lines parallel? Our sight is deceiving us again. The lines are parallel. The diagonal black lines make the horizontal lines appear not straight.

Who is the tallest? Which of the three girls is the tallest? Measure them and find out. They are the same height. The girl in the foreground appears to be the shortest, and the girl in the background appears to be the tallest. In reality, the are the same height.

How many colors do you think are in this picture?

Look Again Look at the enlarged picture. Did you get the right answer? There are only three colors: magenta, green, and white Because some of them are close to one another, we believe we see different colors

Hidden People This is a picture of a bunch of flowers Can you also find the profile of five different people?

The image on the left is clearly a picture of a young man The image on the left is clearly a picture of a young man. What happens when we turn it upside down?

When you look at this image do you see black and white dots flashing?

Read the sentence carefully Is it written correctly?

Parallel Lines When you look at this image, everything seems distorted If you focus, the lines are actually straight and perfectly parallel What’s confusing is the little white squares They make your brain associate them with the other white squares and store them together

Look carefully Look at the circle for a few moments. Does it seem to move?

And for the end… Line up at the back of the classroom, and then get close to the screen you will see the wheels moving
