Where do students rotate? Students who stay on the main campus rotate at a combination of BMC and outside sites Students are responsible for transportation to and from clinical sites and should have a car for third year BUSM is affiliated with more than 50 hospitals, community health centers, and ambulatory clinics

Why a branch campus? The BUSM/Kaiser Permanente branch campus was established in 2015 to offer BUSM students the opportunity to train in one of the most technologically innovative health care systems in the country, and to expose students to Kaiser’s successful integrated health care delivery system.

Kaiser Permanente Officially designated as a branch campus of BUSM in 2015 One of the nation’s largest not-for-profit health plans, serving more than 10 million members Leaders in the use of technology to support health promotion, disease prevention, care delivery and chronic disease management Focus on efficiency and organized delivery – housing as many services as possible under one roof Students rotate at at KP Santa Clara and KP San Jose

Didactics and QI Curriculum 120+ Recorded didactic lectures Didactics adjusted for time difference – students participate via Skype QI curriculum developed by Kaiser faculty delivered on site in CA We recorded more than 120 didactic lectures for the students to view online and adjusted the start time of didactics so that students can participate virtually in small group and case based sessions via Skype. The students in CA are also participating in a QI curriculum designed specifically for them by Kaiser faculty, and our next step will be to make that curriculum available to our students on the main campus as well.

Kaiser Campus Highlights High volume and wide variety of cases High level of student supported Considerable direct attention and teaching from attendings Considerable autonomy and participation, including driving camera and suturing in the OR Experience in a highly successful integrated health care delivery system KP-developed “Quality Improvement Innovations in Healthcare” curriculum Extremely hands-on clinical experience Opportunities for a variety of experiences based on student interest.

Housing Students stay with friends and family or rent housing. Rental rates in the San Jose/Santa Clara area are comparable to Boston. In the past we have been able to secure a limited number of spots in MSR housing for six-month participants for the Boston portion of their year, but this is not guaranteed. Housing in California for six-month participants is the responsibility of the student. Many students sublet. We can provide information on neighborhoods, apartment complexes that rent to students, and other local housing options.

Kaiser Student Reflections “I scrubbed in on 7 cases in one day. I appreciate what a big deal that is.” “The support we’ve received here is incredible.” “I feel like everyone here is truly invested in my education.” “On my first day in L&D I felt like I was second assist – I was fully in there.” “I’ve had an attending sit with me for an hour and a half to explain something to me.”

KP Faculty Reflections “The students were fully engaged from the start.” “Student went above and beyond.” “They ask good questions.” “They’re energetic, prepared, and well read.” “The students have impressed our whole group.” “They have a good fund of knowledge.” “They have demonstrated a great work ethic.”

Applying to the program The Application will be available on-line on October 1. Application to the program is not binding, but we do request that only those with a serious interest apply. Acceptance to the program is determined by the Kaiser committee. Students must be in good academic standing and determined to have the potential for success at the branch campus. Full-year applicants are given preference for admission, followed by six-month applicants. Deadline to apply is November 1. Accepted students will be notified before the Thanksgiving break. We require a firm commitment within one week of acceptance.
