Objective Understand who is key to God’s Master Plan Appreciate the role Jesus plays in saving us from sin

Overview Section 5 Back to the promises…. Who is the seed? Why do we need Jesus? How can Jesus save us from our sins? Why did Jesus need to be both Son of God and Son of Man? Why did Jesus have to die? What does Jesus’ death and resurrection mean to us?

Back to the Promises... Promises are means to fulfil the Master Plan The “seed” is often mentioned And I will put enmity between you and the woman, and between your offspring (seed) and hers; he will crush your head, and you will strike his heel. (Genesis 3v15)

The Seed is key Back to the Promises... Seed also appears in the Promises made to Abraham Genesis 22v17-18 Also in the Promises made to David When your days are over and you rest with your fathers, I will raise up your offspring to succeed you, who will come from your own body, and I will establish his kingdom. (2 Samuel 7v12)

Who is the seed? The angel Gabriel tells us… Paul confirms this… Seed of David is Jesus Luke 1v32-34 Paul confirms this… Seed of Abraham is Jesus Galatians 3v16 Jesus is the promised seed Jesus is the key to the Master Plan!

But your iniquities have Why do we need Jesus? Sin separates us from God Behold, the LORD'S hand is not shortened, that it cannot save; neither his ear heavy, that it cannot hear: But your iniquities have separated between you and your God, and your sins have hid his face from you, that he will not hear. (Isaiah 59v1,2)

Why do we need Jesus? We need to have sin removed to be reconciled back to God That is why Jesus is called “Jesus” She will give birth to a son, and you are to give him the name Jesus, because he will save his people from their sins. (Matthew 1v21)

How can Jesus save us? Adam & Eve Adam and Eve used fig leaves to try and cover their sin Genesis 3v7 God gave them skins to cover themselves Why? The skin covering required death and the shedding of blood Hebrews 9v22

How can Jesus save us? Adam & Eve Pointed forward to crucifixion Covering of sin through death Consequence of sin is death Forgiveness for sin cost a death Death of the Lord Jesus Christ

How can Jesus save us? The Law of Moses People of Israel offered Sin and Guilt offerings Leviticus 1-7 Offerer associated with the death of the animal Pointed forward to Jesus’ sacrifice Animal physically perfect Jesus morally perfect Offerer associated with animals death We associate with Jesus’ death (Section 7) He is to present the bull at the entrance to the Tent of Meeting before the LORD. He is to lay his hand on its head and slaughter it before the LORD. (Leviticus 4v4)

How can Jesus save us? Why was there a law? Unravelling a mystery Appreciate solution if understand problem Law makes us understand the problem We are sinners! What, then, was the purpose of the law? It was added because of transgressions until the Seed to whom the promise referred had come. The law was put into effect through angels by a mediator. (Galatians 3v19)

How can Jesus save us? Why was there a law? The law makes us realise our true position without God We are without hope! The law is our TEACHER…. Galatians 3v24

How can Jesus save us? Jesus - a covering for sin? Sacrifice is necessary for forgiveness of sins Old Testament sacrifices point forward to crucifixion of Jesus …But now he (Jesus) has appeared once for all at the end of the ages to do away with sin by the sacrifice of himself... so Christ was sacrificed once to take away the sins of many people; and he will appear a second time, not to bear sin, but to bring salvation to those who are waiting for him. (Hebrews 9v26,28)

Tea Break

Why did Jesus need to be Son of God? Jesus perfectly displayed God’s character “Anyone who has seen me has seen the Father” (John 14v9) He is our perfect example and way to God John 14v6,7

Why did Jesus need to be Son of God? He could show us God’s glory because he was his son “The son is the radiance of God’s glory and the exact representation of his being.” Hebrews 1v13 Jesus had a special relationship with God - power without limit John 3v34 Jesus was a man who could be perfect if chose to be

Why did Jesus need to be Son of God? He was called Immanuel - “God with us” So men could see a living example of someone displaying God’s character and glory Jesus was the Word of God made flesh

Why did Jesus need to be Son of Man? Jesus often referred to himself as “Son of Man” Matthew 8v20 Jesus had to share our nature Hebrews 2v14-18 God couldn’t have saved us God cannot be tempted - James 1v13 God can’t live with sin God could no be a mediator because he has not shared our nature

Son of God and Son of Man To bring two irreconcilable parties together - need a mediator Priests were mediators Lev 16v15-17 Mediator must understand feelings of both parties

He understood man’s nature: Son of God and Son of Man Jesus is the perfect mediator “For there is one God and one mediator between God and men, the man Jesus Christ.” 1 Timothy 2v5 He understood man’s nature: “For we do not have a high priest who is unable to sympathise with our weaknesses, but we have one who has tempted in every way, just as we are - yet without sin.” (Hebrews 4v15)

Son of God and Son of Man Jesus understood our nature and conquered it Romans 8v3,4 He can set us free from sin because he was never captured by it For just as through the disobedience of the one man the many were made sinners, so also through the obedience of the one man the many will be made righteous. (Romans 5v19)

Son of God and Son of Man Jesus’ mission was to save sinners Matthew 1v21 His name means God Saves Being Son of God He could attain perfection Being Son of Man He could represent us!

Why did Jesus have to Die? God wants us to be part of his Master Plan For God so loved the world that he gave his one and only Son, that whoever believes in him shall not perish but have eternal life. (John 3v16)

Why did Jesus have to die? Jesus was sinless - did not deserve death To save us, he bore our sins, so he had to die But he was pierced for our transgressions, he was crushed for our iniquities; the punishment that brought us peace was upon him, and by his wounds we are healed. (Isaiah 53v5)

Why did Jesus have to die? Being sinless the grave could not hold him Acts 2v24 He destroyed human nature Hebrews 2v14 Took up his place at God’s right hand Acts 3v33 He is now our mediator 1 John 2v1,2

What Does Jesus’ Death and Resurrection mean to us? Forgiveness is NOT Easy It cost a perfect life It cannot be taken lightly We must associate with the sacrifice Romans 6v3, 5-11 We become Sons of God Galatians 3v26,27

What Does Jesus’ Death and Resurrection mean to us? God covers our sins - counts our Faith as Righteousness Romans 4v5 Brings responsibility Hebrews 10v26-27 1 Thessalonians 1v7-11

What Does Jesus’ Death and Resurrection mean to us? Leaves no room to be neutral!
