Theme Key Phrases Repeated Words What the Main Character Learns “I don’t understand Dad” -Vietnam syndrome “ I died, and I’m still dead.” - Terry, the main character who is 13 years old, learns that he can’t help his father but wants to understand him. He learns that his father was the only man left alive from his platoon (out of 54 men). Terry’s father had a traumatic experience therefore has flashbacks. His father will never be the same. Trying to understand someone, brings tolerance.
