Output Devices AS ICT

Types of data

Things to consider When choosing an output device you must think about: Amount of room available – where will it be located. Size of display needed Resolution of display needed Portability How much money you have to spend

Things to consider Type of output Text, graphics or photographs Volume of output This will affect print speed required Size of media required Large format printers cost more Range of media required Inkjets have a wider range than lasers and dot matrix printers cope with multi-part forms Cost v. efficiency High volume printers may cost more to buy but are cheaper to run

Printers Volume of output Quality of output Location Requirements

Ink Jet Printer Advantages Compact Quiet Good resolution Can use a variety of paper – i.e. card, transparencies, photo paper Usually has a scanner Disadvantages Slow when text and colour Ink can smear Ink cartridges are expensive

Need more pins to get clearer characters… The more the merrier! Dot Matrix Printer Disadvantages Slow Poor Colour Noisy Old type of printer Impact printer Small pins

Laser Printer Produces high quality print Fast output Very quiet Although replacement cartridges are expensive, print works out cheaper thank inkjet. Usually used by businesses

Plotters Cartridge Paper Pens move up and down the cartridge Pen/Vector Plotters Penless/Raster Plotters Drum Plotters Flatbed Plotters Cartridge moves from one end to the other. Cartridge Pens move up and down the cartridge Paper

Monitors Attributes: Size Colour Resolution LCD TFT Touchscreen

Other – what devices output sound?

Output of sound

Remember Don’t forget the following need to be considered: Volume of sound needed Quality of sound needed Environment – amount of privacy required Budget available
