Chapter 1

Chapter 1 contents Overview Problem statement Objectives 1 Scope 2 3 Objectives 4 Scope 5 Report outline

Problem statement DESCRIPTION OF THE IDEAL SCENARIO Describe the goals, desired state, or the values that your audience considers important and that are relevant to the problem. THE REALITY OF THE SITUATION Describe a condition that prevents the goal, state, or value discussed in statement 1 from being achieved or realized at the present time. THE CONSEQUENCES Using specific details, show how the situation in statement 2 contains little promise of improvement unless something is done. Then emphasize the benefits of research by projecting the consequences of possible solutions as well.

Example 1: Problem Statement In order to provide excellent patient care at a minimal cost, Middletown Hospital needs diagnostic procedures that are safe, efficient, and accurate. In addition, the procedures should not be overly painful for the patient. Right now, Middletown Hospital's main diagnostic tools are CAT scans and myelograms (spinal taps). The CAT scan fails to make clear diagnoses 60% of the time. When the CAT scan fails, doctors must resort to the myelogram. While the myelograms are accurate, this procedure is very painful and sometimes dangerous for the patient. If Middletown Hospital continues to do the two procedures, they will not only be wasting time and money, which jeopardizes their overall efficiency and earning potential. Also, undue suffering could lead patients to choose another hospital with more advanced facilities.

DESCRIPTION OF THE IDEAL SCENARIO To provide fast data processing and accurate decision-making process with lower complexity, the underwater vehicle system needs a computational platform that is robust, efficient, and accurate. In addition, the platform should be portable and scalable. Example 2: Problem Statement

THE REALITY OF THE SITUATION Currently, the underwater vehicle system main processing platforms used by many researchers and developers are the ATX-PC board, DSP chips, microcontroller, and single soft processor on the FPGA. Two major problems confront these platforms- the complex nature of the decision-making process and the delay in data processing. The long process of gathering, filtering, and handling the data makes the decision- making process complex. On the other hand, issues such as synchronization signals, processing unit architecture, and computational power in the platforms cause delay in the data processing. These platforms are unable to fulfill the whole underwater vehicle system requirements for effective and efficient decision making and fast processing.

Server & Tools Business 6/23/2018 THE CONSEQUENCES Researchers determine post-processing data analysis scenario to overcome the inability problem. Whereas post-processing is accurate and effective, this scenario is not applicable for online missions and does not support autonomous and self-decision making. Therefore to avoid the post-processing approach, a platform that has an efficient concurrent architecture and high processing power is needed to fulfill the requirement of the underwater vehicle system. Your problem statement serves to describe the aim of your Project. © 2012 Microsoft Corporation. All rights reserved. Objectives Provide an accurate description of the specific actions you will take in order to reach this aim Each specific objective consists of one infinitive sentence (To ……..) and should be phrased in a way that makes it possible to draw a conclusion from within the scope of the report. The more precisely you formulate your specific objectives, the simpler it will be to define the type of study and which method(s) you will use in your project.

Example: Objectives The work presented in this project has the following objectives: To design and implement a new embedded concurrent computing architecture on FPGA with the following specifications: Lower level of complexity; high operating frequency, consume as less chip resources and efficient throughput. Enhance decision-making by multiple signals filtering using Embedded Parallel Systolic Filters (EPSF) for input signals. Increase the processing power and reduce delay occurring in the processing modules. To verify and evaluate architecture performance by using FPGA CAD tool and on board testing. Your well-defined project objectives will help you identify the type of study you will do.

Scope A successful project scope statement should be concise and clear. Anyone reading the statement should have a good idea of what the project consists of (and what will not be part of the project). This statement will give a view of the project. It is also important to be specific in a project scope statement.

For example The more specific you can be, the better. "The catalog will feature 100 products" is better than "The catalog will feature many products" and "The project will be completed over six months" is preferable to "The project will be completed over a period of time." The more specific you can be, the better.

Example: Scope UniMAP wants to upgrade its facilities to include WiFi technologies accessible anywhere on campus. This project will offer students, faculty, and staff the ability to be productive from anywhere on campus. The project will take place over a time period in which measurable results will be achieved. Specific Measurable Realistic Time Bound UniMAP will upgrade the library, hostels, offices, and then all campus buildings to IEEE 802.11 technology, starting at the north side of campus. This project will facilitate productivity via computer of faculty, staff, and students. The project will be complete by fall semester, 2011.
