Our Journey Administrative discussions started in December 2015 in regards HB 2610 and the impact on the 16-17 calendar. During these discussions in late January we added to the equation HB 1842 & the District of Innovation concept. As the spring continued, our administrative staff went thru T-TESS training. This prompted a lot of discussion on how campus administrators were going to manage the additional time requirements of T-TESS.

Our Journey (cont.) After the T-TESS training, determination on our part to create some additional time during the “school day” for teachers and administrators. Contacted Palmer ISD & Roscoe ISD. Worked closely with Jeremy Thompson @ Era ISD as our timelines & likely goals were fairly similar. Initial goal was to have a simple plan that met some basic needs.

Our Journey (cont.) Most difficult part of our discussions was the creation of teacher & administrative time that was during the “school day.” Begin DOI process in March 2016 with the passing of the Board Resolution. Process completed on July 10th with final Board approval of DOI plan.

Slidell I.S.D. DOI Background Information First teaching position @ Mart ISD in 1980 we had a floating schedule. Basics of that schedule: 6 period day – classes 75 minutes – meeting 4 days each week Mon. 5th – 2nd – 3rd – 4th – 6th Tues. 1st - 5th – 3rd – 4th – 6 Wed. 1st – 2nd - 5th – 4th – 6th Thurs. 1st – 2nd – 3rd - 5th –6th Fri. 1st – 2nd – 3rd – 4th school dismissed @ 1:30pm The first time this idea was floated was not a positive experience.

Slidell I.S.D. DOI Background Information Staff was in favor of the “planning time” concept but preferred a much more simple concept. The next round of discussions focused on an early release concept (greater than the 6 day current rule), but the concern then turned to the lack of consistency within the options discussed. After repeated failures, we finally hit upon the current schedule in conjunction with our current calendar.
