From: Computational methods for identifying miRNA sponge interactions Figure 1 miRNA sponge mechanism. The four types of miRNA sponges are shown each containing binding sites (short rectangles) for a miRNA of interest (semi-circle). (A) The miRNA sponges have lost the competition, the target mRNA will be post-transcriptionally repressed by the miRNA and degraded. (B) The miRNA sponges have won the competition, the miRNA is freed from regulating the target mRNA, and the target mRNA will be released of repression and translated into protein.
