Instruction – Brief Description Assume a position of instruction (examples: tutor, undergraduate teaching fellow) Take extra steps to help students beyond the usual protocol Instruction – Brief Description
Instruction – My Experience Served as a Teaching Fellow for Fluid Mechanics Solved problems in class, graded quizzes, attended midterms, held office hours twice a week Was available via text or email for semi-immediate long-distance help outside of office hours Instruction – My Experience
Instruction – My Insights Gained Know the problems you solve in class – stumbling can disrupt focus and make answering any questions difficult Be familiar with the homework each week, so you don’t have to be reminded of every problem by every student that was a question during office hours If you want to be a more useful TF, try holding office hours near homework due dates (weekly) Recall that some answers are best redirected to a teacher If the class is project-oriented, make sure you know the project and what the professors expect in terms of deliverables This allows you to be more useful to students asking about such a project as opposed to just homework Instruction – My Insights Gained
BE POSITIVE! Students respond much better if you enjoy what you teach Don’t TF for a class you can’t really get excited about; it is better to have someone who doesn’t excel as much in the class, but is really excited about the material Encourage participation, call on random people, get students involved in the problem solving process; otherwise their concentration will slip and they will lose a lot of the lessons to be learned BE POSITIVE!
