Organizations – banking

Cheque clearing using magnetic ink character recognition (MICR) Numbers are written on cheques in magnetic ink. Cheques are batched together. Read at high speed using a magnetic ink character reader. 100% accuracy. Processing is batch processing. Magnetic ink characters are strange looking characters that you see at the bottom of cheques.

ATM (Automated Teller Machines)/Cash points Use credit/debit cards. Need to enter a PIN. Used to obtain cash and perform other services: balance, deposit cash, mini statements, etc. Operate 24/7. More convenient location. Real-time transaction processing used.

Online banking Uses the Internet. Customers enter username and password. Then usually get asked security questions. Uses encryption to keep banking details secret. Backups must be capable of keeping system running.

Banking backup systems Uninterruptible power supplies. Processors that work in tandem – if one fails the other one takes over. High speed links transfer backup data off-site.

Uses of online banking View bank statements. Transfer money between accounts. Pay bills. Apply for loans.
