Presentation transcript:

Session 3: on-site operational aspects 5 talks Approach to running a tokamak with Be components (JET) Be handling experience from testing Be components (FzJ) Be waste management (IO) Conditions of acceptance in current and future disposal facilities Experience from operation with beryllium (Ulba) Can be grouped in 3 topics Manufacture Be Use in fusion-relevant conditions (where damage/dust is generated) Disposal of waste

Summary (1/3) Be manufacture Clear zoning Use of PPE/RPE depending on zoning (sanitary, first, second, third) Clear signage and applied limits (not that limits differ from country to country) Packing of Be components in plastic bags covers Then packed in metal, plastic, or wooden container depending on case Medical follow-up

Summary (2/3) Be use in fusion-relevant facilities Exposure to such conditions is deemed to contaminate most in- vessel components NB: in ITER first years of operations with Be but no radioactivity Included a full summary of Be management at JET and FzJ Important to label/keep track of components coming out from facility Need cleaning techniques vacuum with soft brushing; Manual cleaning with alcohol wipes + dry wipes; Ultrasonic bath. Pressure washing with demineralised water. Complex: Acid etch, Ultrasonic bath rinse. Important to check Be contamination level when receiving components

Summary (3/3) Be waste 2 types of Be waste in ITER: Be-only (early years), and then activated waste (once nuclear operations begin) Be waste classified as (Dechets Industriels Speciaux or Dangereux)

Points raised during questions/discussion NB: some points raised/discussed during other sessions Link between surface contamination and airborne contamination Process for smear test and variability of results Cleaning of tile gaps on Be FWP? Or take appropriate measures?
