The First Days of School Put a large emphasis on classroom management, especially setting clear procedures and expectations on the first days of school. It had sold over 4 million copies, making it the best selling education book of all time.

Harry Wong’s Philosophy The main trouble in teaching is not discipline, it is failure to teach fully the rules, responsibilities and procedures that make the classroom run like clockwork. Everything we ask students to do involves a procedure, and when students follow procedures automatically, they learn better, behave better and are easier to teach. Students achievement is related directly to how will the teacher forms and carries out procedures. Will make it shorter and put notes on card.

Difference between Discipline and Procedures Discipline concerns how students behave. Procedures concern how things are done. Discipline has penalties and rewards. Procedures have no penalties or rewards

What is the Differences between an Effective and Ineffective Teacher? Has a discipline plan that does not degrade students Make good eye contact Has self-confidence and faith in their students’ capabilities Enforces the rules consistently Teaches students the concept of consequences and responsibilities No clear defined rules Communicate rules sporadically Covey rules in a gruff, angry and condescending manner Non supportive. Tell students, “If you don’t want to learn, not my problem.” Berates students by saying “How many times do I have to tell you?” Watch a video to see if this teacher is effective or ineffective.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ke7td3Ll3-8 Do an activity. Students are to decide what are something the teacher did wrong. What would they do if they were the teacher. Share with the class.

Teacher’s Rule As an effective teacher, teachers should have a set of rules that students should follow. Harry Wongs suggest that there should be no more than five rules. Suggested Rules: Stay on task Follow classroom procedure at all time Always respect your classmates and teachers Raise hand before you are called on

Roles and Responsibilities Teacher’s Student’s To treat you with respect and care as an individual To provide you an orderly classroom environment To provide the necessary discipline To provide the appropriate motivation To teach you the required content To treat me with respect and care as an individual To attend class regularly To be cooperative and not disruptive To study and do your work well To learn and master the required content Have student take out a piece of paper, get with a partner, and than make a list of what are the teacher and students responsibility in the classroom.

Classroom Procedures What is classroom procedure? How things are done or routine of the class Task oriented and predictable Allows the class to function smoothly No Penalties or reward Should be taught during the first days of school

Three Step Approach for Teaching Procedures Explain: State, explain, model, and demonstrate the procedure. Rehearse: Rehearse and practice the procedure under your supervision. Reinforce: Reteach, rehearse, practice, and reinforce the classroom procedure until it becomes a student habit or routine.

Procedures are a part of School Life Procedure for the start of the period or day Line-up Procedures to leave the class Procedure for quieting a class Procedure for going to the bathroom Procedure for dismissal at the end of the period or day Break into groups of four

Harry Wong’s Advice About Teaching By far the most important factor in school learning is the ability of the teacher. The more capable the teacher, the more successful the student. What you do on the first day of school determines your success for the rest of the year. Start class immediately. Do not take roll until later. The more students work together responsibly, the more they learn. Short assignment produce higher student achievement Agree or disagree

Harry Wong’s Advice If the student cannot demonstrate learning, it is the teacher’s fault, not the students. Use criterion –reference tests to evaluate student performance. The more frequent the tests, the higher the achievement Grade on what is learned, not on the curve- a procedures that has done great harm. Agree or disagree
