The Phases of the Moon 23 June 2018 Starter: 1. Why do eclipses only last a few minutes? 2. Why do you think ancient people were frightened of eclipses? 3. What causes an eclipse of the Sun (a solar eclipse)? 4. What causes an eclipse of the Moon (a lunar eclipse)? 5. What would a lunar eclipse look like if you were an astronaut standing on the Moon?

What happens during a solar eclipse? During a solar eclipse the Moon moves directly between the Sun and the Earth. During a solar eclipse the Moon blocks the Sun’s rays from reaching part of the Earth. Where must the Moon be for a solar eclipse to take place?

What happens during a lunar eclipse? During a lunar eclipse the Earth blocks the Sun’s light from reaching the Moon. During a lunar eclipse the Moon is on the opposite side of the Earth to the Sun. Where must the Moon be for a lunar eclipse to take place?

The Phases of the Moon 23 June 2018 Today we are looking at the moon and the different phases of the moon By the end of the lesson we will have been successful when we have: Named the different apparent forms of the moon Explained how the different phases of the moon arise in terms of its orbit around the Earth.

Sun, Earth, and Moon Quiz

I bet you know the answers! What causes day & night? Which one is bigger the earth or the moon? Where does the moon get its light from? What percent of the earth is always lit by the sun? How many stars are in our solar system? How many days does it take for the Earth to revolve around the sun? How many low and high tides on Earth every 24 hours?

THE EARTH is the third planet from the Sun, rotates on its imaginary axis counterclockwise every 24 hours or 1 day appears blue in space because it is 70% water revolves around the sun every 365 days or 1 year.

Which one is the smallest? Which one is the largest? Can you put these in size order? Place the following in order from largest to smallest. Moon Sun Earth

Answer: Sun, Earth, then moon The sun is the largest Next in size is the Earth. The moon is smaller than the Earth.

Which of these is the biggest? The moon The Earth The sun Jupiter

Answer: H The sun is the largest! Our sun is the only star in our solar system. The sun is also the largest heavenly body in our solar system.

The moon revolves around - itself the Earth the sun Jthe solar system

The moon revolves or orbits the Earth once every 29 days. We all ways see the same side of the moon because the moon rotates and revolves at about the same speed.

Earth Science Question: rotation The rotation of the Earth on its axis causes- days months seasons years

Rotation causes day & night. Rotation is the turning or spinning of the Earth in one place on its imaginary axis. Rotation of the earth on its axis causes day & night. (answer A).

Which of these is caused by the turning of the Earth? Summer and winter Stars Day and night Moon phases

The turning of the Earth causes Day & Night

When the moon is seen from the Earth as a whole circle, it is called a- Crescent moon Full moon Half moon New moon

When the moon is seen from the Earth as a whole circle, it is called a FULL MOON.

The revolution of the Earth around the Sun takes- a day & night or 12 hours a week or 7 days a month or 29-31 days a year or 365 days

The revolution of the Earth around the sun Takes 365 days or one year.

The Moon The Sun and the Moon look about the same size from Earth, but they are not. The Sun is about 400 times wider than the Moon but is 400 times further away! The Moon takes just over 27 days to orbit the Earth. sunlight

The Phases of the Moon sunlight These are called the phases of the Moon sunlight These are the views of the Moon from Earth.

The Phases of the Moon – new Moon This is the view of the Moon from Earth.

The Phases of the Moon – crescent Moon This is the view of the Moon from Earth.

The Phases of the Moon – gibbous Moon This is the view of the Moon from Earth.

The Phases of the Moon – full Moon This is the view of the Moon from Earth.

The Phases of the Moon – gibbous Moon This is the view of the Moon from Earth.

The Phases of the Moon 23 June 2018 Now complete the questions on the sheet ‘All about the moon’ and ‘Phases of the Moon’

Questions about the Moon 1. The Moon does not produce its own light - how can we see it? 2. How long does it take the Moon to orbit the Earth? 3. Why do we always see the same side of the Moon? 4. Why do we only see a full Moon once a month? 5. What is a new Moon? 6. What force keeps the Moon in orbit around the Earth? 7. Why is there very little atmosphere on the Moon? Homework: Find out how the Moon causes tides.
