Why You Should Avoid Alcohol You may do or say things you will regret. Your judgment becomes clouded and you may engage in other high-risk behaviors. Your long-term health will be damaged. Your relationships with family and friends will be damaged. Your performance at school will suffer. When your judgment becomes clouded, you might engage in other high-risk behaviors such as using other drugs, engaging in sexual activity, or riding in a car driven by another drinker.

Addiction and Alcoholism A person who drinks regularly will develop a tolerance for alcohol and runs the risk of developing alcoholism. tolerance A need for increasing amounts of a substance to achieve the same effect Alcoholism can start by having an occasional drink. He or she begins drinking larger amounts. As time goes on, the person develops a tolerance. If this cycle isn’t interrupted, the person can become an alcoholic. alcoholism A disease in which a person has a physical and mental need for alcohol

Help for Alcoholics and Their Families There is no cure for alcoholism, but it can be treated. Children of alcoholics are never to blame for a parent’s alcoholism. Treatment for alcoholism includes cleansing the alcohol from the body. An alcoholic needs help with the physical and emotional desire to have a drink. Children of alcoholics sometimes blame themselves.

Help for Alcoholics and Their Families Alcoholics Anonymous (AA) helps people with alcoholism. Al-Anon provides support for family members living with an alcoholic. Alateen helps teenage children of alcoholic parents learn to cope with problems at home. Listings for these organizations can be found in phone directories and on the Internet.
