6.1 Vectors

What is a vector? Many physical quantities, such as speed, can be completely described by a single real number called a scalar. A scalar indicates the magnitude, or size, of the quantity. A vector is a quantity that has both magnitude AND direction. The velocity of a football is a vector that describes both the speed and direction of the ball.

Vector or scalar? A boat traveling at 15 miles per hour A hiker walking 25 paces due west. A person’s weight on a bathroom scale. A car traveling 60 miles per hour 15º east of south. A parachutist falling straight down at 12.5 miles per hour A child pulling a sled with a force of 40 Newtons.

How to represent a vector A vector can be represented geometrically by a directed line segment, or arrow diagram, that shows both magnitude and direction. The vector represented to the right would be called: 𝐴𝐵 , 𝑎 , or 𝐚. If a vector has it’s initial point at the origin, then it is said to be in standard position. The direction of a vector is the directed angel between the vector and the horizontal line of the x-axis. The length of the line represents, and is proportional to, the magnitude of the vector. Magnitude is denoted as 𝐚 .

Getting our bearings The direction of a vector can also be given as a bearing. A quadrant bearing 𝜑, or phi, is a directional measurement between 0º and 90º east or west of the north-south line. The quadrant bearing of v shown is 35º east of south or southeast, written as S35ºE.

Represent the vector geometrically To be accurate, we could use a protractor and a ruler. For now, let’s focus on correct quadrant and roughly accurate drawings. a=20 feet per second at a bearing of N30ºE v=75 pounds of force at 140º to the horizontal z=30 miles per hour at a bearing of S60ºW t=20 feet per second at a bearing of N65ºE u=15 miles per hour at a bearing of S25ºE m=60 pounds of force at 80º to the horizontal.

Vector types Parallel vectors: have the same or opposite direction but not necessarily the same magnitude. In the figure, a||b||c||e||f Equivalent vectors: have the same magnitude and direction. In the figure, a=c because they have the same magnitude and direction. Notice that 𝐚≠𝐛 since 𝐚 ≠ 𝐛 , and 𝐚≠𝐝 because a and d do not have the same direction. Opposite vectors have the same magnitude but opposite direction. The vector opposite a is written –a. In the figure, e=-a.

Resultants and the triangle method When two or more vectors are added, their sum is a single vector called the resultant. The resultant vector has the same affect as applying on vector after the other.

Zero vector What happens when you add opposite vectors? The resultant is the zero vector, or null vector, denoted by 0 or 0. The zero vector has a magnitude of 0 with no specific direction. Subtracting vectors is similar to subtraction with integers. To find 𝐩 −𝐪, add the opposite of q to p. 𝐩−𝐪=𝐩+(−𝐪)

Multiplying vectors by scalars

Draw a vector diagram of 3𝐱− 3 4 𝐲 Rewrite the expression as addition 3𝐱+(− 3 4 𝐲) Draw a vector 3x the length of x Draw a vector ¾ the length of y and in the opposite direction of y. Then use the triangle method to draw the resultant vector.

Components Two or more vectors with a sum that is a vector r are called components of r. While components can have any direction, it is most useful to express, or resolve, a vector into two perpendicular components. The rectangular components of a vector are horizontal and vertical.

Real world example Heather is pushing the handle of a lawn mower with a force of 450 Newtons at an angle of 56º with the ground. Draw a diagram that shows the resolution of the force that Heather exerts into its rectangular components. Find the magnitude of the horizontal and vertical components of the force. (HINT: USE TRIG)

real WORLD EXAMPLE 2 A player kicks a soccer ball so that it leaves the ground with a velocity of 44 feet per second at an angle of 33º with the ground.
