Software Applications for End-users are: Products Applications Programs that someone operating a computer system uses

Browsers … A browser is an application which allows end-users to ‘browse’ websites and view web pages How does the browser do this? by converting HTML (the language web pages are written in) into web pages containing multi media and links Chrome, Internet Explorer, Safari and FireFox and are the most popular browsers

HyperText Markup Language HTML … Converted

Search engines … An End-user application that allows you to search the internet for information Google is a global search engine. The EIT Search is a local search engine (EIT site search only) Indexes pages to match keywords the user keys into searches Search engines ‘crawl’ through the web to collect and index pages

Web sites… Applications for end-users which show multi-media (text, graphics, sound and motion) on multiple web pages Use ‘hyperlinks’ to jump from webpage to webpage Accessible when you key in a URL (or web address)

Email … Application for an end-user that allows you to Sending and receiving of messages electronically over the Internet - Email The most widely used Internet tool Email can include attachments Quick and cheap communication!

How does an email get from your computer to someone else?

So what are end-user applications? Applications/programs/products for users web browser (application or program) allows users to ‘see’ web pages search engine (application or program) allows users to find something using keywords web site (application or program) allows users to view web pages containing multi media email (application or program) allows users to communicate over the Internet

Dangers of applications for end-users … Using these apps to access the Internet opens your computer system up to attack

Maintain internet security … Install a security firewall imposes restrictions on incoming and outgoing traffic helps prevent unauthorised activities eg spyware

Evidence of firewall working … Features include logging and reporting, automatic alarms when their might be a an attack.

More internet security … Install Antivirus programs protects against malware and other malicious software must be kept up to date and run automatically

Web based applications …. Cloud based applications Security needs to follow data as it moves across different devices
