Miniature Bulgaria Group project assignment – Year 9 Romance Languages Secondary School Burgas, Bulgaria

The assignment Based on a cultural studies lesson about Miniature Worlds and Mini-Europe students were asked to create their own miniature model park for visitors to Bulgaria They were divided into 6 groups of 4-5 students, each with the task to select attractions from their country to present in an interactive way

The assigment Students then had about 10 days to research their topic and develop their 10- minute presentations They could choose whether to make an interactive poster or a PowerPoint presentations They were next to present it to their classmates and check what they have learned

Aims To develop students’ research, speaking and presentation skills To develop social skills through team work To develop ICT skills To enhance knowledge about the cultural attractions of Bulgaria through the use of English To create materials which can raise our partners’ awareness of the beauty of our country

Some finishing touches

Presentations Each group had about 15 minutes to present and collect feedback on their performance from the class and the teacher. They had previously had a chance to discuss the organisation of their mini- lessons with their teacher Marks were awarded for their materials and their oral performance and the level of interaction with their audience

Presentations As there was no overlap in content, students were not bored The focus was on the interactive element, so they all tried to involve the audience in different ways: some with quizzes, other with questions given before, during or after their talks After each presentation there was a short discussion about strengths and weaknesses and students were given the chance to improve their materials before they were given their final mark

Was it worth it? We ended up with 2 poster and 4 PowerPoint presentations about 25 attractions from our country The students became more confident in presenting in front of an audience They learned from each other’s mistakes and are now better both at speaking in public and making interactive presentations The presentations themselves can be useful in teaching similar lessons to other students
