Eleanor M. Savko 6/23/2018 Answer options: Adventure, to get away from problems in the East (such as slavery), and the main reason was for the land.

Name two ways that the pioneers would cross rivers. Eleanor M. Savko 6/23/2018 Name two ways that the pioneers would cross rivers.

Eleanor M. Savko 6/23/2018 1. Emigrants could use a ferry, (some ferries were operated by Native Americans, some were operated by the Mormons and other entrepreneurs). 2. They could caulk their wagons (built rafts) and float them across the river. 3. They could ford the river (find a shallow place to walk across). 4. They could swim across the river. 5. They could use one of the few bridges that were in place.

Eleanor M. Savko 6/23/2018 How might the weather have affected when the pioneers decided to leave the Northeast to head West?

Eleanor M. Savko 6/23/2018 The pioneers would need to leave early enough in the year to beat the snows in the western mountains. They would also need to leave late enough in the spring to miss the rainy season, so their wagons wouldn’t get bogged down in the mud and so the rivers wouldn’t be swollen.

Eleanor M. Savko 6/23/2018 When the pioneers were finally able to build houses, what part of the house did they normally not have?

Eleanor M. Savko 6/23/2018 Windows. The reason for this is because there was no place to buy glass in Oregon Country at that time.

Eleanor M. Savko 6/23/2018 Because the pioneers could not buy stoves, what did they build for heating and cooking?

Eleanor M. Savko 6/23/2018 Fireplaces

Eleanor M. Savko 6/23/2018 The average farm wagon could hold about 2,000 pounds of goods and supplies.

Eleanor M. Savko 6/23/2018 If the pioneers were running low on supplies out on the trail, how might they restock their provisions?

Eleanor M. Savko 6/23/2018 1.The pioneers could hunt, fish or gather roots and berries. 2. They could purchase supplies at the forts. 3. They could trade with the Native Americans.

The Indians had to find new hunting ground because the pioneers were clearing trees to build farms and the animals had to find new homes. 3. The buffalo began to disappear because they were being shot, sometimes just for sport. 4. Some Indians even began to dress and live more like the settlers were. 5.
