Nehemiah 13:10-18, 23-25 (ESV) Scripture

10 I also found out that the portions of the Levites had not been given to them, so that the Levites and the singers, who did the work, had fled each to his field.  Scripture

11 So I confronted the officials and said, “Why is the house of God forsaken?” And I gathered them together and set them in their stations.  12 Then all Judah brought the tithe of the grain, wine, and oil into the storehouses.  Scripture

13 And I appointed as treasurers over the storehouses Shelemiah the priest, Zadok the scribe, and Pedaiah of the Levites, and as their assistant Hanan the son of Zaccur, son of Mattaniah, for they were considered reliable, and their duty was to distribute to their brothers.  Scripture

14 Remember me, O my God, concerning this, and do not wipe out my good deeds that I have done for the house of my God and for his service. Scripture

15 In those days I saw in Judah people treading winepresses on the Sabbath, and bringing in heaps of grain and loading them on donkeys, and also wine, grapes, figs, and all kinds of loads, which they brought into Jerusalem on the Sabbath day. And I warned them on the day when they sold food.  Scripture

16 Tyrians also, who lived in the city, brought in fish and all kinds of goods and sold them on the Sabbath to the people of Judah, in Jerusalem itself! 17 Then I confronted the nobles of Judah and said to them, “What is this evil thing that you are doing, profaning the Sabbath day?  Scripture

18 Did not your fathers act in this way, and did not our God bring all this disaster on us and on this city? Now you are bringing more wrath on Israel by profaning the Sabbath.” Scripture

23 In those days also I saw the Jews who had married women of Ashdod, Ammon, and Moab. 24 And half of their children spoke the language of Ashdod, and they could not speak the language of Judah, but only the language of each people.  Scripture

25 And I confronted them and cursed them and beat some of them and pulled out their hair. And I made them take an oath in the name of God, saying, “You shall not give your daughters to their sons, or take their daughters for your sons or for yourselves. Scripture

Rebuilding Broken Souls

The first group of Jews moved back to Jerusalem with Zerubbabel to rebuild the worship center. 80 years later, another group of Jews moved back to Jerusalem with Ezra to rebuild their spirituality with the Law.

14 years later, a third group of Jews moved back to Jerusalem with Nehemiah to rebuild the walls of Jerusalem. Why someone with a good position would leave his job and go to a city with broken walls?

1:1, The words of Nehemiah the son of Hacaliah 1:1, The words of Nehemiah the son of Hacaliah. Now it happened in the twentieth year, as I was in Susa the citadel that Hanani, one of my brothers, came with certain men from Judah. And I asked them concerning the Jews who had survived the exile, and concerning Jerusalem.

3 And they said to me, “The remnant there in the province is in great trouble. The wall of Jerusalem is broken down, and its gates are destroyed by fire 4 As soon as I heard these words I sat down and wept and mourned for days, and I continued fasting and praying before the God of heaven.

God revealed the needs of the Jewish people to Nehemiah through Hanani because God wanted Nehemiah to do something about their needs.

Is your heart broken by what you heard or saw? Can you do something about it?

2:1, Now I was cupbearer to the king 2:1, Now I was cupbearer to the king. In the twentieth year of King Artaxerxes, when wine was before him, I took up the wine and gave it to the king. Now I had not been sad in his presence.

2 And the king said to me, “Why is your face sad, seeing you are not sick?” Then I was very much afraid. 3 I said to the king, “Let the king live forever! Why should not my face be sad, when the city, the place of my fathers' graves lies in ruins, and its gates have been destroyed by fire?”

4 Then the king said to me, “What are you requesting 4 Then the king said to me, “What are you requesting?” So I prayed to the God of heaven. 5 And I said to the king, “If it pleases the king, and if your servant has found favor in your sight, that you send me to Judah, to the city of my fathers' graves, that I may rebuild it.”

6 And the king said to me, “How long will you be gone, and when will you return?” So it pleased the king to send me when I had given him a time.

The king asked how long it would take and Nehemiah told him that it might take a long time to build the walls perhaps 12 years. How did I know that he requested for 12 years.

2:1, I was cupbearer to the king 2:1, I was cupbearer to the king. In the twentieth year of King Artaxerxes. 5:14 from the time that I was appointed to be their governor in the land of Judah, from the twentieth year to the thirty-second year of Artaxerxes the king, twelve years.

11 So I went to Jerusalem and was there three days 11 So I went to Jerusalem and was there three days. 12 Then I arose in the night, I and a few men with me. And I told no one what my God had put into my heart to do for Jerusalem. There was no animal with me but the one on which I rode.

13 I went out by night by the Valley Gate to the Dragon Spring and to the Dung Gate, and I inspected the walls of Jerusalem that were broken down and its gates that had been destroyed by fire.

The broken walls represent the three areas of brokenness in our lives: physical, emotional & spiritual brokenness from living in this world.

Some are physically broken because they have cancers, AIDs, or ebola viruses – most of the sicknesses are caused by the dark prince of this world.

Some are mentally broken because they grew up in dysfunctional broken homes, they were abused and abandoned so their minds are full of angers and fears.

Everyone is spiritually broken because they are in love with sinful things of the world, and the sinful things are taking over their hearts – the only spiritual cure is to be separated from the sinful things.

Nehemiah identified four areas that needed fixing: the broken city walls; marriages between Jews & pagans; withholding tithes from Levites; buying & selling on Sabbaths.

If a person doesn’t know that he is a viral or bacterial carrier (SARS) and he is not quarantined, he will pass the virus or germs to others and make them sick and even die.

If a person doesn’t admit or know that he has mental illness, he will create troubles in every community that he joins.

9:38, “Because of all this we make a firm covenant in writing; on the sealed document are the names of our princes, our Levites, and our priests. 10:1, “On the seals are the names of Nehemiah the governor,

10:28, “The rest of the people, the priests, the Levites, the gatekeepers, the singers, and all who have separated themselves from the peoples of the lands to the Law of God, their wives, their sons, their daughters, all who have knowledge and understanding,

29 join with their brothers, their nobles, and enter into a curse and an oath to walk in God's Law that was given by Moses the servant of God, and to observe and do all the commandments of the Lord our Lord and his rules and his statutes.

30 We will not give our daughters to the peoples of the land or take their daughters for our sons.

31 And if the peoples of the land bring in goods on the Sabbath day to sell, we will not buy from them on the Sabbath or on a holy day. And we will forego the crops of the seventh year and the exaction of every debt.

35 We obligate ourselves to bring the firstfruits of our ground and the firstfruits of all fruit of every tree, year by year, to the house of the Lord;

37 and to bring the first of our dough, and our contributions, the fruit of every tree, the wine and the oil, to the priests, to the chambers of the house of our God; and to bring to the Levites the tithes from our ground.

But as soon as Nehemiah left for Persia on official business they broke all their promises.

13:6, While this was taking place, I was not in Jerusalem, for in the thirty-second year of Artaxerxes king of Babylon I went to the king. And after some time I asked leave of the king 7 and came to Jerusalem

10 I found out that the portions of the Levites had not been given to them, so that the Levites and the singers, who did the work, had fled each to his field.

11 So I confronted the officials and said, “Why is the house of God forsaken?” And I gathered them together and set them in their stations. 12 Then all Judah brought the tithe of the grain, wine, and oil into the storehouses.

15 In those days I saw in Judah people treading winepresses on the Sabbath, and bringing in heaps of grain and loading them on donkeys, and also wine, grapes, figs, and all kinds of loads, which they brought into Jerusalem on the Sabbath day.

18 Did not your fathers act in this way, and did not our God bring all this disaster on this city? Now you are bringing more wrath on Israel by profaning the Sabbath.”

This was the sickness of the soul because they trusted money instead of trusting God; they worship money instead of God.

19 As soon as it began to grow dark at the gates of Jerusalem before the Sabbath, I commanded that the doors should be shut and that they should not be opened until after the Sabbath. And I stationed some of my servants at the gates, that no load might be brought in on the Sabbath day.

20 Then the merchants and sellers of all kinds of wares lodged outside Jerusalem once or twice. 21 But I warned them, “Why do you lodge outside the wall? If you do so again, I will lay hands on you.” From that time on they did not come on the Sabbath.

22 Then I commanded the Levites that they should purify themselves and come and guard the gates, to keep the Sabbath day holy. Remember this also in my favor, O my God, and spare me according to the greatness of your steadfast love.

23 In those days also I saw the Jews who had married women of Ashdod, Ammon, and Moab. 24 And half of their children spoke the language of Ashdod and they could not speak the language of Judah, but only the language of each people.

25 And I confronted them and cursed them and beat some of them and pulled out their hair. And I made them take an oath in the name of God, saying, “You shall not give your daughters to their sons, or take their daughters for your sons or for yourselves.

28 And one of the sons of Jehoiada, the son of Eliashib the high priest, was the son-in-law of Sanballat the Horonite. Therefore I chased him from me. 30 Thus I cleansed them from everything foreign.

Please honestly identify one brokenness or sinfulness in your life. If you are bothered by your hidden sinfulness, do something about them.

Do you promise to keep Sunday holy? Do you promise to worship God with the faith community instead of making money on Sunday?

Do you promise to set aside and donate 10% of your wages to God? Do you promise not to buy things for personal enjoyment with the money that should be set aside for supporting pastors & missionaries?

Do you promise that you won’t become one with anything that God hates? Do you promise to separate yourself from the sinful things that occupy your hearts?
