Aerospace Grads & AIAA Student Transitions Karen Thomas

Student Membership Student Dues = $25 Note: Student membership is required to participate in DBF, Regional Student Paper Conferences, Paper Design Comps, and to apply for scholarships. At this time, I do not have student membership broken out by undergrad, Masters and/or PhD.

Aerospace Grads by Degree (Grad data is from ASEE) 2016 graduate data is not available yet

Total Aerospace Grads Vs Student Transitions – View #1 (Grad data is from ASEE) 2016 graduate data is not available yet Current dues structure 1st year student to professional transition dues = $30 (25% of prof dues) 2nd year dues = $60 (50% of prof dues) 3rd year dues = $90 (75% of prof dues) 4th year dues = $120 (100% of prof dues) 2006 - discontinued the auto upgrade. Students were not asked if they wanted to transition to prof status, we just did it based upon graduation date. Retention was terrible and students complained. 2007- launched a new annual upgrade campaign, which included calling all eligible upgrades. ROI was poor. (1st yr. dues was $0) 2009 - moved to a 3 time a year campaign. Campaign outreach efforts were more aligned with graduation dates. AIAA also moved to a new membership database system and as such tracking and report generation changed. 2011 we made a really big push to encourage students to upgrade because the dues was going to increase in 2012 and we were moving to a 3 year dues transition. 2012 moved back to the 3 time a year campaign. 2016 transitioned to an automated marketing campaign, not working as expected. Will change the process in the coming months. Note: Outreach to graduating students is only part of our problem. Value for the price is a bigger problem. Students don’t feel they are getting additional benefits/services for increased dues.

AIAA vs. Other Societies Membership Trends Jeanette Domber

AIAA vs. Other Societies Membership Trends – Annectodal Information Informally surveyed my colleagues that are also active in leadership of their professional societies International Society of Optics and Photonics (SPIE): In general, membership has gone up in recent years Driven by student members and academia Downturn in industry membership that is concerning American Astronomical Society& Division of Planetary Sciences (Science focused) Membership is roughly steady Good distribution of career levels Benefit from being the only professional societies for astronomy and planetary science

AIAA vs. Other Societies Membership Trends – Plan Forward Work with Karen to leverage AIAA resources Reach out to membership personnel at other societies American Society of Mechanical Engineers, American Society of Civil Engineers, American Society of Composites, American Helicopter Society, Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers, Society of Automotive Engineers Who else? Collect relevant data from other societies Membership trends Membership demographics Competition Membership fees Conference fees (for members, i.e. what’s the discount) Member benefits (free publications, newsletters, career resources, professional prestige, awards, etc. ?Survey to members, past members? What value do you get from AIAA? Why did you leave AIAA? ?Survey forum attendees who are not members when they register?

Background and Moving Foward NIS asked to look at look at a “Clean Sheet” of the TC/PC structure Spent time understanding current structure and status of the TC/PCs Collected current data on TCs/PCs One third of the TCs/PCs not doing well – one third doing more than half the work (e.g. metrics that could be easily identified) Metrics easy to identify for some committees (awards, etc), not so easy for others (History TC) Stand-up and sunset – no nurturing or sunset methodology for starting or eliminating committees SciTech Workshop to help develop path Value of TC/PC-like part of AIAA – what should they be doing to serve the membership (metrics) Organization – how should “they” be organized to best serve and engage the membership Potential Parallels/Applicability to Section and Regions

Papers, conferences and journals Quick Output from Workshop: What are best things (high value) that we do well Papers, conferences and journals Creating forums for technical interaction and networking Insuring aerospace technical quality TC involvement/participation in all the above

Quick Output From Workshop: What should we consider de-emphasizing Outreach/contributing to policy makers / public policy Not very TC focused on technical tasks Doesn’t necessarily require a subcommittee chair Others already doing this task TC focus on STEM/K-12 Sections & Others are doing this better (better suited) Some TCs find this difficult to do Redundant/non-impact reporting Year-in-review (AA article) Newsletters within TCs Consider whether to make these “value-added” efforts within the TCs

Quick Output: What idea should be added/improved Define technical gaps/roadmaps within TCs Incentivize inter-TC cooperation/behavior Allow TCs to have space at the exhibits hall Serve as leaders for community of interest within TCs Extend the TC scope to include regions TC/Section outreach and communication Virtual presentations and workshops Output of conferences to interested parties Increased professional development (content and advertising) Multi-disciplinary TCs Many of These Ideas are Being Implements as Part of New Governance

Suggested Way Forward Actions - Conferences Idea Grouping: Additions to Conferences Section involvement in conferences and TCs – Local chair Allow TCs to have space at the exhibits hall Suggested Actions Talk to Peter Montgomery to find out what he is already doing with 2017 AIAA SPACE conference – heard he has significant Florida Section Involvement (Idea #1) Talk to TAC about idea of TCs at exhibits (Idea #2) Conference calls with Executive Boards of Conferences (Both Ideas)

Suggested Way Forward Actions – AIAA Changes Idea Grouping: Serve as leaders for community of interest within TCs Virtual presentations and workshops Output of conferences to interested parties Incentivize inter-TC cooperation/behavior Multi-disciplinary TCs Suggested Actions: Telecon with AIAA Staff Already list of experts on website – maybe “Ask AIAA?” linked to TCs (Idea 1) Find out if other ideas have been looked at (Idea 1-3) Suggested Actions: Discussion with TAC Find out if new Governance and PC structure action (Idea 4-5)

Suggested Way Forward Actions – TC Specific Ideas Idea Grouping: TC Specific Changes Extend the TC scope to include regions - TC/Section outreach and communication Define technical gaps/roadmaps within TCs Incentivize inter-TC cooperation/behavior Multi-disciplinary TCs Increased professional development (content and advertising) Bring back TC metrics Suggested Actions: Need implementation ideas – ask NIS to look at this Incentivize TCs to redo call for papers TAC funds No action - already happening Incentive TCs with awards or TAC funds to do more short courses TAC discussion

Workshop Agenda 12:45 – 1:15 Welcome Remarks David Riley Introductory Remarks Sandy Magnus Workshop Purpose & Goals Jeff Laube / Robbie Robertson 1:15 – 2:00 Task 1: Define TC/PC Functions and Requirements 2:10 - 3:00 Task 2: Value/Success Exercise 3:10 – 4:00 Task 3: Addressing Stakeholder Needs 4:15 – 5:00 Report Outs & Next Steps/Follow-Up

The Questions and Ideas Considered at Workshop Review the role and requirements (aka functions) of a TC or PC? Place/grade functions on “high & low value / doing well/not doing well” quad chart Are these functions providing value to the Institute, our members, and important stakeholders? People Were Ready to Discuss Ideas and Approaches!!

Task 1: Define TC/PC Functions and Requirements: Concept: List/sort AIAA technical committee functions & requirements into 3 areas Quantitative: those functions having readily identifiable metrics (e.g., number of papers submitted to a “call for papers”) Qualitative: those functions not amenable to measurement (e.g., professional growth opportunities) Other (e.g., TC participation at non-aerospace event) Exercise 1a: list existing functions; Exercise 1b: list new ideas/functions

Task 2: Value and How Well Are We Doing Concept: Put functions/requirements into plot Asterisk next to those things unique to AIAA Doing Well Low Value High Value Not Doing Well * Unique to AIAA

Task 3: Addressing Stakeholder Needs “The Boss” Commitment to AIAA Committees impacts the continuing participation of their employees Play a role in the adoption and distribution of the Committees work internally to their organization Young Professionals Important to the future of the Committees and AIAA Haven’t been engaged with the Committees to the extent that is seen as desirable Quadrant 1/2/3 Functions High Value/Doing Well High Value/Not Doing Well Low Value/Doing Well “The Boss” (Do Functions address needs Y or N? If “N’” how do we provide value?) YPs (Do Functions address needs Y or N? If “N” how do we provide value?)

Quick Output: What are best things (high value) that we do well Papers, conferences and journals Creating forums for technical interaction and networking Insuring aerospace technical quality TC involvement/participation in all the above
