How to read the schedule… where do I go next? 1st core class 2nd core class 3rd core class 4th core class

About Mr. Mikesell Born in Lima, Ohio and moved to Southern California and back to Ohio Graduated from Bowling Green University and Rio Salado Teaching for 9 years been in Kyrene for last 3 years Have two great kids that keep me busy Email (best method): kmikesell@kyrene.org Website: good for weekly agenda, resources, and homework

Core Enrichment Students will rotate through their core classes for more time during the time frame of fourth period Monday is extra time with Period 1 Tuesday is extra time with Period 3 Thursday is extra time with Period 5 Friday is extra time with Period 7 All of sixth grade will have 15-20 minutes of personal silent reading time at the beginning of Core Enrichment All students will need a reading book every day

Discipline Policy ADMINISTRATOR MANAGED (conduct referral from teacher) 1. Repetitive and/or extreme teacher managed behavior violations 2. Bullying, aggressive language, threats, harassment of students or teachers) 3. Fighting or aggressive physical contact 4 Cheating, plagiarism, forgery, theft First step -Tell student to stop -Describe expected behavior Second Step -Refocus student to another teacher -Refocus examples: minor disruptions -Low level disrespect towards teachers, students, property Lunch DT examples: - Gum use (after warning) - 3rd tardy (parent contacted) - Multiple personal electronics - policy offenses in hallways Third step – sent to ISI -major disruption -higher level disrespect toward teachers, students, property

Progressive Discipline 6th Grade Refocus Policy A student who is disturbing class or not following class rules will be given a refocus. A student can receive only one refocus per day. If a student has already been refocused and is disruptive in any more classes that day, the student will be sent to ISI for a time-out. Parents will be notified of the ISI visit. A student can receive a maximum of two refocuses per week. The refocuses do not have to be from the same teacher. If a student is considered for a third refocus at any time that week, the student will be instead sent to ISI for a time-out. Parents will be notified of the ISI visit. If a student has received 6 refocuses total at any point during the school year the student will have a conference with the teachers & administration, and from that point forward the student will go directly to ISI for a time-out instead of being refocused. Once a student starts to receive ISI time-outs, Akimel A-al’s progressive behavior policy for ISI is as follows: 3 time-outs to ISI results in 1 full day of I.S.I. & meeting with parents, Academic Behavior Specialist, and School Counselor 6 time-outs to ISI results in 2 full days of I.S.I. & meeting with parents and District Behavior Intervention teacher to consider special education services for social/emotional needs 9 time-outs to ISI results in 3 full days of I.S.I. 12 time-outs to ISI results in a 1 day Off Campus Suspension

Rewards and Consequences PBIS (Positive Behavioral Intervention and Supports) Students earn PRIDE points which are entered into LiveSchool system Students can use their LiveSchool points to buy rewards, access to pop-up parties, or teacher chosen activities and rewards PRIDE tickets are given out when good behavior is seen in hallways Parents can also see LiveSchool points and data on the app Lunch detentions “Oops” tickets given for misbehavior in the hallways Served with an administrator in the lunchroom

Programs here at Akimel A-al AVID (Advancement Via Individual Determination) AVID class starts in seventh grade Support to help students with college readiness College outlook is seen around the campus WEB (Where Everyone Belongs) Eighth grade students mentor groups of sixth graders Friday the 4th will be spent mostly with WEB Bring a packed lunch and wear appropriate attire (no skirts, dresses).
