Lawrence in arabia Hugh McMurray

Background info

Main Character: T.E. Lawrence T.E. Lawrence was a British archaeologist and Army officer Played a liaison role in the Arab uprising against the Ottoman Empire. Became the popular character “Lawrence of Arabia” due to his international roles

Background info on book Takes place during World War I 1915 to 1919 are the years Isn’t really specifically set in one country, but the majority of it happens in the Middle East

Brief history of the Middle East

World war I itself/What happened in my book WWI began when the Archduke of Austria was assassinated, as he was heir to the Austria-Hungary throne 2 different groups fighting each other: Allies: Russia, Great Britain, France Later added: USA, Japan, Italy Central Powers: Germany and Austria-Hungary Later added: Ottoman Empire, Bulgaria Russian government collapsed in 1917, leading to them joining the Central Powers

Map of wwi involved countries

What did I learn about the area and culture? The Ottoman Empire was very xenophobic during WWI Made a law that allowed for Ottomans to deport any Armenians A lot of the important battles took place in the Middle East Fall of the Ottoman Empire and other countries set the scene for WWII.

Primary Source from timeperiod Here’s a link to some of the letters that Lawrence wrote during his travels: http://www.telstudies.org/writings/works/articles_essays/170523_in_sherif_ab dullah's_camp.shtml Other letters included him discussing the death of his brother

Overall thoughts on book Not a bad book, but a lot could have been better Certain areas of the book dragged on for what felt like forever Would recommend if interested in WWI in the Middle East Very informative book, however it felt like some information wasn’t necessary
