Substructure Construction Sequence ?
Plot of Ground
Remove Topsoil
Excavate
Lay Foundation What material is used? Concrete Why? Strong in compression BUILDING LOADS What is the function of the foundation? Transfer the loads safely to the subsoil
Build substructure walls What materials are used? Blocks/bricks What is the function of the cavity fill? Stabilise the substructure wall
Excavate internal floor level To accommodate internal floor construction?
Backfill With compacted hardcore internally. Why? Provide a firm sub-base for floor construction as soil is compressible What materials are used? Any dense materials but no organic materials
Blinding What is blinding? Fine granular material e.g. sand What is its purpose? Prevent the DPM being pierced/punctured Damp-proof membrane e.g. polythene sheet What is a DPM? What is its purpose? Prevent vertical passage of moisture from ground
Lay Slab What material is used? Concrete
Construct Superstructure Lay DPC? What is a DPC? Damp-proof course What is its purpose? Prevent vertical passage of moisture in wall What is the purpose of a wall tie? What are the red ‘clips’? Stabilise the wall Retainers that clip on the wall ties to hold insulation in place
Finish Floor Lay Insulation Reinforcement is placed in the screed, why? Lay Floor screed Because the screed is not bonded to slab it will crack otherwise
Wall Finishes Plaster walls Fix Skirtings
