Social Studies All students are required to take Social Studies in 9th grade. Context for our students future

CWCTC – Ms. Beth Butala 9th grade students are allowed to attend Central Westmoreland Career and Technology Center. Students can also choose to start in 10th grade. Criteria for acceptance is a completed application to CWCTC and completion of Algebra I with a 70% or above. Student applications also include grades, attendance, discipline, and test scores. Acceptance will based on the above criteria and the number of spaces available in each program. Deadline for CWCTC applications is Friday, February 10, 2017.

CWCTC – STEM BASED EDUCATIon 1:2:7 CWCTC is preparing students to work alongside those with the Master’s and Bachelor’s degrees. These careers are plentiful, necessary, and provide good income. Many of the technical jobs require on the job training or moderate levels of education – this accounts for 53% of current needed jobs.

CWCTC – Preparing for the future Career and Technical Education improves student achievement in high school, college, and career. Is helping to guide our students in learning the needed skills and training for those jobs that are in demand Begins the process of “post high school credentials for all”

CWCTC – Preparing for the future We are a vital part in preparing our workforce for tomorrow. 23 programs are offered – the majority of which are STEM BASED Top 3 skills and experiences students report gaining during their CTE experience: Skills to help them get a job in the future The chance to work as part of a team. Real world examples to help them understand academic classes.

Keystone Exams The Keystone Exams are end-of-course assessments designed to evaluate proficiency in academic content. Beginning with the Class of 2019, students must demonstrate proficiency in: Algebra I Biology – at the conclusion of the course (9th grade) Literature – at the conclusion of the course (10th grade)

Keystone Exams Students are to be proficient or advanced in these subject areas. If a student fails to reach at least the proficient status, they must retake the test during the school year and remediation will be offered to help students become proficient. The PA Department of Education has made the Keystone Exams part of the state graduation requirements.

Looking ahead (Grades 10 – 12) Course offerings will include (reference online Course of Study booklet for details): College in the High School courses Dual Enrollment courses All of these options provide students with the opportunity to earn college credits while enrolled in high school.

Scheduling information Counselors will visit the middle school to review important scheduling information on Thursday, January 26, 2017 and receive detailed handouts. The online scheduling window will open on Thursday, January 26, 2017 at 3:00 p.m. The online scheduling window will close on Wednesday, February 1, 2017 at 9:00 a.m. Middle School counselors will meet with students individually starting after the window closes. Students are able to make changes after the close of online scheduling – they will need to see their counselor to make any changes
