Material Girl Madonna’s hit song, “Material Girl” reflected the desire to own luxurious things, but also encouraged female strength and independence. She was one of the most successful female singers and businesspeople of her time. Her image affected music, fashion, and lifestyles.

Fashion Music influenced the way many teens dressed. Girls wanted to dress like Madonna and guys began dressing in oversized, baggy clothing like rappers on MTV.

Fashion While the yuppies were busy building careers and trying to impress people with their clean-cut, affluent dress codes, other young Americans were heading in a different direction.

Fashion “Punk,” popular in England in the 70’s, made its way to the U.S. in the 80’s featuring black, leather jackets, ripped jeans, and body piercings.

Fashion Movies also influenced fashion and pop culture. The movie “Flashdance” featured tank tops, tight-fitting pants, and torn sweatshirts and legwarmers. “The Breakfast Club” portrayed high school stereotypes in the 80’s. Five students from different backgrounds spent the day together in Detention and found they were not that different from one another after all.

Rap music had a profound impact on society. The explosion of Rap Music Rap music had a profound impact on society. Many rap artists found a way to express their views on political and cultural issues without compromising the basic hip-hop style of their songs.

More than any other group, Run DMC were responsible for this unique sound and style of music. The trio set the standard for the next decade of rap. They helped move rap from a singles-oriented genre, to an album-oriented one.

My Adidas This song was a tribute to their favorite sneaker. After the group released the song, one of their record producers brought some executives of the shoe maker to one of Run D.M.C.’s concerts. After seeing 3,000 fans holding up their shoes, the company named a shoe after them. They were also hired to promote the shoe. They were never paid for wearing Adidas during their concerts, only when they were promoting the shoe at Adidas events.
