The Rise of Facism Gabriel Benavente Period 1 Mr. Marshall AP World History 3/30/09

Ideology of Fascism The main idea of facism was to destroy “the will” of the individual in favor of “the people” (Bulliets pg 773) Which meant rejection of liberal ideas such as freedom and individual rights, and often presses for the destruction of elections, legislatures, and other elements of democracy. (Princeton Review Book pg 244) Fascists pushed for another identity, one rooted in extreme nationalism which often relied on racial identity (Princeton Review Book pg 244) The term was first used by Benito Mussolini which means union and is also the ancient Roman symbol of power.(http://www.angelfire.com/tx5/ara/pde/facism.html) Italian Fascist Flag (http://wikibrowser.net/images/en/220px_Flag_of_Italian_Fascism_svg.png)

Mussolini in Italy He created the first fascist government and created the fascist party in 1919, by 1921 it held seats in the Italian Parliament (Princeton review Book) He glorified warfare and the Italian nation (Princeton Review Book) He threatened to march on Rome if he was not a prime minister, The timid parliament and king easily gave in (http://www.angelfire.com/tx5/ara/pde/facism.html) He crushed all opposition parties and jailed anyone who opposed him (Bulliets pg 773-774) The party took over the press, public education and youth activities and gave employers control over their workers (http://www.angelfire.com/tx5/ara/pde/facism.html) His great orator skills kept the public up with enthusiasm and fascists movements now began to spread throughout other areas (Bulliets pg 773-774) Benito Mussolini (https://soiseth.wikispaces.com/file/view/Mussolini.jpg)

The Rise Of Hitler Leader of the Nazis, he wrote Mein Kampf a book explaining his ideas and beliefs while in jail, which many found to be to extreme in 1933 Hitler suspended the constitution, abolished the presidency, and declared himself Germany's Führer (Princeton Review Book pg 245-246) he glorified violence and war and wanting to get back for all the humiliations from the treaty of Versailles (Bulliets pg 775) taking advantage from the depression, the Nazis gained support from people unemployed with the promise of jobs and Hitler was elected Governor (Bulliets pg 775) by following social Darwinism, Hitler was convinced that the Aryan (German) race was the most highly evolved race and that inferior races such as the Slavs corrupted the German race (Princeton review Book pg 246) He reserved most of his hatred towards Jews and believed in the deportation which later turn into the massacre of Jews (Bulliets pg 774-775) Hitler was able to insert his fascist vision of the new Germany into a highly receptive political culture. The Third Reich quickly created the technical, organizational, militaristic, and social means to implement its far-reaching schemes for the transformation of Germany and large parts of Europe.(http://www.angelfire.com/tx5/ara/pde/facism.html) Adolf hitter (http://www.solarnavigator.net/history/explorers_history/adolf_hitler_portrait.jpg)
