Justice is in one scale, and self-preservation in the other.” - Thomas Jefferson Essential Question(s): What factors encouraged the nation to expand and prompted people to settle in different locations at different times? Specified Content: Eli Whitney, “interchangeable parts”, cotton gin, steam power, canals, railroads, roads, Francis Lowell textile factory, New England and the Ohio River Valley, the free enterprise system State Standards: Strand 1 Concept 5 PO 5 (Describe the impact of the following aspects of the Industrial Revolution on the United States: transportation improvements (e.g., railroads, canals, steamboats), inventions (e.g., telegraph, cotton gin, interchangeable parts)

The Market Revolution During the late 18th and early 19th century the American economy will be greatly increased by the growth of transportation, new inventions, new production methods and new farming techniques/tools that lead to the “market revolution”.

Federal and State governments will invest in the building of roads, railroads and canals linking distant communities to each other. Steam engines began powering trains and ships increasing their speed. This will allow goods to be sold over great distances.

Inventors like Eli Whitney will improve how goods are made and how labor is used. In 1793 he invented the cotton gin revolutionizing the cotton industry. He was also one of the first pioneers of using interchangeable parts.

Business men were also busy mechanizing their industries Business men were also busy mechanizing their industries. In1821 the Lowell Textile factory had completely mechanized their production of cloth.

Most of this industry was located in the New England and Ohio River Valley area due to its abundant amount of natural resources. The Southern States were also more focused on the growing of cash crops.

This economic growth relied on capitalism; the economic system where private businesses/individuals control the means of production to earn a profit.

Assignment Explain to me the growing sectionalism between the Industrial North and the Agricultural South. Do the two sections of our country need each other? 1 paragraph answer
