Build your Ion Table Teams in class built a periodic table of ions from the 26 cards. If you were not here for this part, come in during PAWS or after school to see the table and complete the questions.

Team Questions Obtain a question set (attached to blog post) Make observations of your team table Answer in your journals

Discussion What kinds of periodic patterns do you notice for the charges on the ions? Why do ions have a charge? Does the identity of an atom stay the same when electrons are transferred?

Take Notes Cation: An ion with a net positive charge. Usually formed from metal atoms. Anion: An ion with a net negative charge. Usually formed from nonmetal atoms. The charge on an ion is noted with a superscript: Examples: Li+ Al3+ Cl- O2-

Noble Gas Envy What is the connection between the shell models of ions and the shell models of noble gases? Atoms tend to gain or lose electrons to attain the electron arrangement of a noble gas.

Chemical Stability When we studied nuclear reactions, we used the word “unstable” for nuclei of radioactive isotopes. In chemical reactions, we use the word “unstable” for atoms with electron arrangements that tend to cause chemical reactions.

Check-in Draw a shell model for Calcium, Ca, showing the arrangement of its electrons. What would have to happen for an atom of Calcium to have an electron arrangement like that of a noble gas? Explain.
