KSHSAA Track and Field Rick Bowden Electronic Devices Creating Excitement at your Meet Items covered on this set of slides applies specifically to KSHSAA items
Principles Whatever you do – it should ADD to the enjoyment WORKERS PARTICIPANTS COACHES SPECTATORS Whatever you do – it should not interfere with the running/management of the meet ITEM NUMBER 7 ON ANNOUNCEMENT SHEET
VIDEO BOARD Video board – used at our state meet for five years Live feed into the board showing events in progress Video replay used during the day following event – as “filler” Roving cameras – pick up spectators, coaches, officials, etc. Use for AD’s – promotional – sportsmanship, etc. Coaches access the on-line testing via the “Schools” side/tab on the KSHSAA web site (www.kshsaa.org/”schools’) Coaches will need to know the schools ID and password in order to log on
VIDEO BOARD Set up on before the meet Wed/Thur – meet on Fri/Sat. Cameras – inside and outside the facility Remove on Sat/Sunday COMMON PROBLEMS If coaches don’t correctly mark the level and/or gender on the on-line exams, then much time is used to “cross-check” for exams. 2) If coaches “scroll” using their mouse on the form, it will pull up another sport when they stop – they will fail to catch this, send in the exam and then they will be submitting answers for a sport different than track and field. 3) If something does happen to the on-line answers, if coaches made and kept a copy of the answers they submitted, we can grade that for the coaches. Otherwise they have no verification that they submitted the answers to the exams before the deadline.
PLUSES Entertainment “Filler” Annoucements Source of revenue – ad sales Other applications Cross Country
VIDEO BOARD FREESTYLE PRODUCTIONS 7160 Madison Ave. W Minneapolis, MN 55427 www.freestyle-productions.com Chris Tahti 763-417-9575 (office) Chris.tahti@freestyle-productions.com Stress this point ITEM NUMBER 8 on Announcement sheet It is critically important for correct “tracking” information for the KSHSAA that we have accurate information as to which coaches attend the required rules meetings. When coaches fail to clearly indicate the gender and/or the level they are the head coaches for, it leads to extensive time to cross check attendance cards AND it can result in the KSHSAA sending letters to school Principals about coaches failing to attend the rules meetings when in fact they have.
Automatic Timing System Has become a “requirement” Tied into the video board Use the HYTEK software Instant feedback on results Quick verification of advancement/qualifications Reduces errors Stress this point NO ONE SHOULD LEAVE THIS MEETING WITHOUT ALSO LEAVING AN ATTENDANCE CARD
Automatic Timing System Ticker Timing Mike Leiker mike@tickertiming.com Track Coaches/athletes, school people Extra cards for both starters and coaches will be provided to track and field interpreters and available for those persons that fail to bring the cards sent to them.
Electronic Measurement Used for the first time – 2009 Javelin event Will add the discus this year Reduces the number of event judges/workers Safety Speed Accuracy
Electronic Measurement Can be downloaded directly into the software program Local Engineer MKEC Engineering Counsultants, Inc. Michael Small 316-684-9600 FOR TRAVELING SCHOOLS – LITTLE IF ANYTHING FROM THE PAST WILL CHANGE FOR THE REGIONAL HOST SCHOOL – THE USE OF HY-TECH WILL BE MUCH EASIER FOR THEM
Electronic Measurement Additional applications Shot Pole Vault High Jump Long Jump (?) Triple Jump (?) THIS WAS A MAJOR CHANGE LAST YEAR GIVES COACHES CONSIDERABLE MORE OPTIONS WHEN MAKING REGIONAL ENTRIES HOWEVER COACHES MUST BE VERY CAREFUL TO NOT HAVE AN ATHLETE ACTUALLY “COMPETE” IN MORE THAN FOUR TOTAL EVENTS IF AN ATHLETE “COMPETES” IN MORE THAN FOUR EVENTS IN THE REGIONAL, THAT WOULD MAKE THEM INELIGIBLE FOR COMPETING IN ANY EVENTS AT THE STATE MEET.
Where will it end? Only your mind and inventiveness will limit what can be done!
