CAMBRIDGE IGCSE EXTENDED READING PAPER Question 3 Summarise Information

Starter: Summarising a smaller extract of text In the exam, the question will often direct you to a specific area of text and ask you to summarise it. If this is a shorter extract (one or 2 paragraphs) then it is highly likely that you will have to focus on a specific area. You will have to get rid of all imagery, metaphors, similes, adjectives, and flowery language in general. In order to access the higher grades you will also have to use inference to summarise what the writer is getting at.

The extract summarises the differences between the lions in captivity and in their natural habitat.

The question is worth 20 marks. Relevance to the extended reading paper In the extended reading paper, this is the third question, which requires you to read 2 different texts. Although you read 2 texts you deal with them separately (DO NOT COMPARE THEM!) The question is worth 20 marks. You will have to summarise an aspect of the first passage and then do the same for the second one. The question suggests that you write a full page in total – so half a page on each text.
