What is it? Self harm can be a way of dealing with very difficult feelings that build up inside you. Self harm can affect anyone, and it is more common than you would think. Many people hurt themselves in secret and it takes a long time before they find the courage to tell someone. Why do you think that is? (think back to the jam jars)

Point 1 “Self harm is an outward sign of inner anguish and turmoil. It is very difficult for people who self harm to talk about it because they often feel ashamed, embarrassed or confused. “

Point 2 “Self harming gives relief by substituting physical pain for emotional pain. It makes the pain real. It may be the only way to deal with ‘big problems’.“

Point 3 “Self harming gives a feeling of control power something (even one’s own body) when everything else is in chaos, confusion or out of control. It helps overcome the feelings f powerlessness.”

Point 4 “It may be an selfish attempt at communication with self or others or a protest which is saying ‘ look at what you have done to me or made me do’ and ‘look at how much I hurt’. “
