Two Minds Towards Obedience
Why Do You Obey God? I obey God because it makes sense I obey God because He said it
Faith as a Form of Comprehension A study of Faith reveals: It is NOT blind It is NOT self-originated So then faith comes by hearing, and hearing by the word of God. Romans 10:17
Faith as a Form of Comprehension Faith as understanding is not: “I know why God has asked me to do…..” Faith as understanding is: “I know what God has asked me to do”
Faith Entails TRUST in God As seen in: Abraham – Genesis 22:2-12, James 2:21-22 Ge 22:2 Then He said, "Take now your son, your only son Isaac, whom you love, and go to the land of Moriah, and offer him there as a burnt offering on one of the mountains of which I shall tell you.“ Ge 22:12 And He said, "Do not lay your hand on the lad, or do anything to him; for now I know that you fear God, since you have not withheld your son, your only son, from Me.“ Jas 2:21 Was not Abraham our father justified by works when he offered Isaac his son on the altar? 22 Do you see that faith was working together with his works, and by works faith was made perfect?
Faith Entails TRUST in God As seen in: Abraham – Genesis 22:2-12, James 2:21-22 Joshua – Joshua 6:3-24 GJos 6:3 "You shall march around the city, all you men of war; you shall go all around the city once. This you shall do six days. 4 "And seven priests shall bear seven trumpets of rams' horns before the ark. But the seventh day you shall march around the city seven times, and the priests shall blow the trumpets. 5 "It shall come to pass, when they make a long blast with the ram's horn, and when you hear the sound of the trumpet, that all the people shall shout with a great shout; then the wall of the city will fall down flat. And the people shall go up every man straight before him.“ Jos 6:20 So the people shouted when the priests blew the trumpets. And it happened when the people heard the sound of the trumpet, and the people shouted with a great shout, that the wall fell down flat. Then the people went up into the city, every man straight before him, and they took the city.
Faith Entails TRUST in God As seen in: Abraham – Genesis 22:2-12, James 2:21-22 Joshua – Joshua 6:3-24 Moses – Exodus 14:10-28 Ex 14:10 ¶ And when Pharaoh drew near, the children of Israel lifted their eyes, and behold, the Egyptians marched after them. So they were very afraid, and the children of Israel cried out to the LORD.11 Then they said to Moses, "Because there were no graves in Egypt, have you taken us away to die in the wilderness? Why have you so dealt with us, to bring us up out of Egypt? Ex 14:21 ¶ Then Moses stretched out his hand over the sea; and the LORD caused the sea to go back by a strong east wind all that night, and made the sea into dry land, and the waters were divided. Ex 14:27 And Moses stretched out his hand over the sea; and when the morning appeared, the sea returned to its full depth, while the Egyptians were fleeing into it. So the LORD overthrew the Egyptians in the midst of the sea. 28 Then the waters returned and covered the chariots, the horsemen, and all the army of Pharaoh that came into the sea after them. Not so much as one of them remained.
Faith Entails TRUST in God As seen in: Abraham – Genesis 22:2-12, James 2:21-22 Joshua – Joshua 6:3-24 Moses – Exodus 14:10-28 We must acts because God said it, NOT because we understand or agree Ex 14:10 ¶ And when Pharaoh drew near, the children of Israel lifted their eyes, and behold, the Egyptians marched after them. Applications Christian relationships – Colossians 3:18-4:1 Church works – 1 Timothy 3:1-13 Church discipline – Matthew 18:15-18 Tit 3:10 Reject a divisive man after the first and second admonition, 11 knowing that such a person is warped and sinning, being self-condemned.
We Need to Learn to Trust God “I know what I am doing” – God “I meant what I said” – God “I want the best for you” – God Jehovah has restrained His omnipresence and does when we are in sin; He will not go there (consider the parable of the prodigal son)
Obedience and Understanding Naaman’s lesson in trust – 2 Kings 5:1-15 God’s Command – "He who believes and is baptized will be saved; but he who does not believe will be condemned” Mark 16:16 Jehovah has restrained His omniscience in the past
