An Approach to Thinking about Global Warming for Students in Elementary Schools AMS90 19th Symposium on Education Ryoko Fujimori, Tadayuki Iwaya, Michihiko Tonouchi(*), Yuichi Mizukoshi (Weather broadCaster Network Japan) Takashi Nakagawa (Sharp Corporation)

Outlook of our presentation 1. Targets and features of our classes 2. History of our activity 3. Slides and experiments 3-1. Lecture 3-2. Experiments 4. Conclusion and future plan

1-1. Target of our class Target Why we have classes at junior school? We hope that children, who will lead the next generation, will understand the actual situation and future of the earth, will learn about recycling systems and natural energy will have a consciousness of the environment will get to know about an earth-friendly way of living. Why we have classes at junior school? CO2 emission from the household still increases regularly. thinking and learning with students who study at elementary schools would be good opportunities not only for students and also for their parents. In 5th. grade of Junior Schools and in 2nd. Grade of Junior high school, students learn weather as a compulsory subject

Have solution and show actions 1-2. Feature of our class Style of our class ① Broadcast meteorologists(WCN) and Engineers(SHARP) cooperates, in 1st. Class, Meteorologists talk scientific facts and global warming in easy words in 2nd class, Engineers tail real solution or future possibility to reduce risks caused by global warming Broadcast Meteorologists (WCN) Familiar for children Engineer (SHARP) Have solution and show actions ② Cover whole Japan Almost 100 broadcast meteorologists and 300 SHARP engineer cover whole requests from all over Japan ③ Quiz and Experiments Using Quiz and experiments, students can join into class in a positive way. ④ Follow up web site Manage follow up web site for questions and actions.

2-1 History Weather broadCaster Network Japan (WCN) started activities in 2004. Member : more than 100 members, who work or worked on TV or radio as broadcast meteorologists Classes at schools Lectures for local communities Lectures for private companies SHARP started environmental classes related to recycling systems of its products in 2001 and natural energy in 2004 in schools in the vicinity of facilities.

3. Lecture and Experiment 1st. Class Broadcaster make a presentation 2nd. Class Experiment with Engineer and broadcaster

3-9. What does matter?

3-10. lecture and experiment ■ Global warming Weather topic Climate change Global warming Waste at home CO2 absorbs heat in infrared rays effectively . ■ Natural Energy Low-carbon path Natural Energy (Solar power) Generate with solar panel ■Recycle Recycle system Introduce factory Method Separate trash using magnets

4-1. Conclusion and future plan Merits of each side <for schools> Acceptable to have a class with a broadcaster meteorologist compare to have a class with only private company staff. <for meteorologists> Budget support and Enhance their activities <for SHARP> Promote their environmental activities and motivate social activity

4-2. Conclusion and future plan ・ We have held over 500 classes per year Schools 1,369 Students about 92,150 (at Sep. 2009) ・Letters from students more than 3,000 letters in a year ・Environmental issues continuously studied through the year in schools.

4-3. Conclusion and future plan ①Open sky class ②Manual training China 25 USA 21 Asia 11 ③classes abroad
