Feast of Trumpets Pastor Nathan Weller September 10, 2017 Series: Fantastic Feasts (and Who You Find In Them)

The Feast of Trumpets is a wake up call to God’s Judgment

rest, a sacred assembly commemorated 23 The Lord said to Moses, 24 “Say to the Israelites: ‘On the first day of the seventh month you are to have a day of sabbath rest, a sacred assembly commemorated with trumpet blasts. 25 Do no regular work, but present a food offering to the Lord.’” --Leviticus 23.23-25 (NLT)

1 “‘On the first day of the seventh month hold a sacred assembly and do no regular work. It is a day for you to sound the trumpets. 2 As an aroma pleasing to the Lord, offer a burnt offering of one young bull, one ram and seven male lambs a year old, all without defect. 3 With the bull offer a grain offering of three-tenths of an ephah of the finest flour mixed with olive oil... (cont’d) --Numbers 29.1-6 (ESV)

as a sin offering to make atonement for you. ...with the ram, two-tenths; 4 and with each of the seven lambs, one-tenth. 5 Include one male goat as a sin offering to make atonement for you. 6 These are in addition to the monthly and daily burnt offerings with their grain offerings and drink offerings as specified. They are food offerings presented to the Lord, a pleasing aroma. --Numbers 29.1-6 (ESV)

...a memorial proclaimed with blast of trumpets... --Leviticus 23.24 (ESV)

The Feast is a reminder that God is the Creator

"What sorrow awaits those who argue with their Creator. Does a clay pot argue with its maker? Does the clay dispute with the one who shapes it, saying, 'Stop, you're doing it wrong!' Does the pot exclaim, 'How clumsy can you be?' --Isaiah 45.9 (NLT)

The Feast was a time for them to prepare for God the Judge

God takes His stand in His own congregation; He judges in the midst of the rulers. --Psalm 82.1 (ESV)

Blow the trumpet in Zion; sound the alarm God takes His stand in His own congregation; He judges in the midst of the rulers. --Psalm 82.1 (ESV) Blow the trumpet in Zion; sound the alarm on my holy hill. Let all who live in the land tremble, for the day of the Lord is coming. --Joel 2.1 (ESV)

John appeared, baptizing in the wilderness and proclaiming a baptism of repentance for the forgiveness of sins. --Mark 1.4 (ESV)

1 Therefore, since we are surrounded by such a great cloud of witnesses, let us throw off everything that hinders and the sin that so easily entangles. And let us run with perseverance the race marked out for us, 2 fixing our eyes on Jesus, the pioneer and perfecter of faith. --Hebrews 12.1-2 (NIV)

The Feast of Trumpets encourages us to anticipate the return of Christ.

The Lord will appear above his people; his arrows will fly like lightning! The Sovereign Lord will sound the ram’s horn and attack like a whirlwind from the southern desert. The Lord of Heaven’s Armies will protect his people. --Zechariah 9:14 (NLT)

--1st Thessalonians 4.13-18 (ESV) 13 But we do not want you to be uninformed, brothers, about those who are asleep, that you may not grieve as others do who have no hope. 14 For since we believe that Jesus died and rose again, even so, through Jesus, God will bring with him those who have fallen asleep. 15 For this we declare to you by a word from the Lord, that we who are alive, who are left until the coming of the Lord, will not precede those who... (cont’d) --1st Thessalonians 4.13-18 (ESV)

--1st Thessalonians 4.13-18 (ESV) ...have fallen asleep. 16 For the Lord himself will descend from heaven with a cry of command, with the voice of an archangel, and with the sound of the trumpet of God. And the dead in Christ will rise first. 17 Then we who are alive, who are left, will be caught up together with them in the clouds to meet the Lord in the air, and so we will always be with the Lord. 18 Therefore encourage one another with these words. --1st Thessalonians 4.13-18 (ESV)

--1st Corinthians 15.50-52 (ESV) 50 I tell you this, brothers: flesh and blood cannot inherit the kingdom of God, nor does the perishable inherit the imperishable. 51 Behold! I tell you a mystery. We shall not all sleep, but we shall all be changed, 52 in a moment, in the twinkling of an eye, at the last trumpet. For the trumpet will sound, and the dead will be raised imperishable, and we shall be changed. --1st Corinthians 15.50-52 (ESV)

--Micah 7.18-20 (NIV) 18 Who is a God like you, who pardons sin and forgives the transgression of the remnant of his inheritance? You do not stay angry forever but delight to show mercy. 19 You will again have compassion on us... (cont’d) --Micah 7.18-20 (NIV)

--Micah 7.18-20 (NIV) ...you will tread our sins underfoot and hurl our iniquities into the depths of the sea. 20 You will be faithful to Jacob, and show love to Abraham, as you pledged on oath to our ancestors in days long ago. --Micah 7.18-20 (NIV)
