1. The Periodic Table of Elements The periodic table is an arrangement of the chemical elements. Ordered by their atomic number (number of protons), electron configurations, and recurring chemical properties.

Video - Adorable 3-Year-Old Periodic Table Expert Brielle https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7nGz7xgGJzc Start at 1:42 and play until end of periodic table.

2. Period A period is the name given to a horizontal row of the periodic table. The periodic table has seven periods. Period 1 contains only two elements: hydrogen and helium.

3. Group or Family In chemistry, a group (also known as a family) is a column of elements in the periodic table of the chemical elements.

4. Metals Majority of the elements are metals. A substance (as gold, tin, copper, or bronze) that has a more or less shiny appearance, is a good conductor of electricity and heat.

5. Non-Metal A chemical element (as boron, carbon, or nitrogen) that lacks the characteristics of a metal. The elements that are generally considered other nonmetals include hydrogen, carbon, nitrogen, phosphorus, oxygen, sulfur, and selenium.

6. Metalloid An element (as boron, silicon, or arsenic) intermediate in properties between the typical metals and nonmetals. They usually have some properties of metal.

7. Alkali Metals The alkali metals are a group of elements in the periodic table. They are all in the first column of the periodic table. The only element in the first column that is not usually considered an alkali metal is hydrogen. They are shiny, soft, metals. They are very reactive.

8. Alkaline Metals or Alkali Earth Metals The family of chemical elements called the alkaline earth metals consists of beryllium, magnesium, calcium, strontium, barium, and radium. These chemical elements occupy the second column of the periodic table.

9. Transition Metals One of the elements in group 3-12 of the periodic table. This is most of the familiar metals like iron, copper, nickel, silver, and gold. Most are hard and shiny. They are good conductors of electricity.

10. Inert/Noble Gas Along the extreme right-hand column of the periodic table of elements is a group know as the noble gases: helium, neon, argon, krypton, xenon, and radon. Also known as the rare gases, they once Were called inert gases, because scientists believed them incapable of reacting with other elements. .
