Master on Gender and Development Programme Center for Gender Studies Faculty of Social Sciences Tirana University

A Cooperation between: Gender Institute, Faculty of Social Sciences, University of Tirana and Celi Danish Research Center on Gender Equality, Roskilde University, Denmark. “Capacity building for Gender Mainstreaming” project of UNDP, Tirana, country office.

Master in “Gender and Development” Gender Institute was founded in 2001 as a joint effort of academic staff of FSS, with the support of UNOPS and SOROS foundation. Approved by Senate of the University of Tirana.

GI Aims To analise the structure, social background, institutional framework and organisation, historical changes and inhereted traditional form of patrilineality in the Albanian society. To promote the role of women in society as part of vulnerable groups based in human rights principles.

GI Main Interest The GI aims to promote teaching and research methodologies in the area of Gender Studies and to build bridges between Universities, Research Centers, National Institutions, NPO-s, Policy-makers, International organizations, Media and Business.

Twinning Project (2004–2005) First step: Danish Team study visit to Tirana, on September 2004. Second step: Albanian Team study visit in Denmark, University of Roskilde, November 2004. Third step: Danish team visit to Tirana for finalising the MA programme, April 2005. The project aimed to enhance the capacity of the GI, to more effectively fulfull its function as a Center for Gender Studies. This twinning provided capacity building support for developing Advanced Gender Studies programmes. (MA level)

Staff of professors National lecturers and experts in :gender, social work, sociology, psychology, law, economics, etc. International lecturers from Celi Danish Research Center on Gender Equality, Roskilde University, Denmark. International experts working in Albania in the above fields.

The structure of the Master Program Duration: part-time, 24 months, 3 semesters + one semester thesis. The Part time model implies lectures during evenings and weekends. Benificiaries: Students and representatives from Public Administration, POs and NPOs.

This programme is offered by the Gender Institute and offers the following benefits: Provides advanced postgraduate education to the highest standard to students. Provides an interdisciplinary approach to issues of country development that is thoroughly informed by a gender perspective.

Prepares students for employment as gender specialists in development agencies and higher policy-making institutions. Prepares students for independent research leading to an academic career.
