Preview This PowerPoint presentation is designed to get you the volunteer to know the basic essentials in umpiring. We will start with very basic umpiring mechanics and advance as time goes. At the end of this you may be asked to take a written assessment as well as be evaluated on the field to determine your readiness. Thank you for your time and dedication. Basic Mechanics Safe – notice how the umpires hands come from the middle of his body, go out and then return to the middle of his body before dropping. You should practice these mechanics at home. Out Foul – Foul at plate - notice the umpire pointing the direction of the ball after the foul call. On the plate there is more to it but this will do for now. Fair – Fair at plate – notice the umpire did not say anything but pointed only. Saying fair can be heard as foul and you just messed up. In all of the cases when making a call on a ball from behind the plate it is appropriate to remove your mask.

Fair Ball A FAIR BALL is a batted ball that settles on fair ground between home and first base, or between home and third base, or that is on or over fair territory when bounding to the outfield past first or third base, or that touches first, second or third base, or that first falls on fair territory on or beyond first base or third base, or that while on or over fair territory touches the person of an umpire or player, or that, while over fair territory, passes out of the playing field in flight. Where is the ball?

Foul Ball A FOUL BALL is a batted ball that settles on foul territory between home and first base, or between home and third base, or that bounds past first or third base on or over foul territory, or that first falls on foul territory beyond first base or third base, or that while on or over foul territory, touches the person of an umpire or player, or any object foreign to the natural ground. Hits a player in the box When a batter hits the tee This is a dead ball and all play shall cease. No re-do

Calling time Time – Behind the plate – Called in rookie divisions (tball and coach pitch) - When an infielder has control of the ball and all runners have stopped advancing. In all other divisions when appropriate Do not call time too often in upper divisions. This slows play and can cause problems. In intermediate and up, the ball is always live unless time has been called. Example – while a batter is walking to the plate the pitcher picks off a runner at first. Runner is out

Positioning Review the PDF in the folder titled umpire positioning. Review the following information Plate positioning Base positioning For our purposes we DO NOT use the “D” position Review all website information for bases. There is a lot to this and you are a beginner. Ask questions.

Calling behind the plate Calls behind the plate – here timing is key. You want to see the pitch and determine with good judgment what you saw. Pause, read and react is a good rule to follow. General – please explore each link on the page Strike – we use the traditional approach. You only vocalize a called strike. If the batter swings there is no vocalization. Ball - stay down to make this call. If you come up too quickly spectators may see that you intended to call a strike. Foul Foul tip – this is a live ball. No vocalization here, just the signal.
