Pennsylvania Professors Strike

Faculty at Pennsylvania's 14 state-supported universities walked off the job Wednesday for the first time in the system's 34-year history, shutting down education for 105,000 students. A strike, by definition, is a refusal to work organized by a group of employees as a form of protest against their employer. Members of the Association of Pennsylvania State College and University Faculties went on strike because no agreement was reached with the Pennsylvania State System of Higher Education. The main issues seem to be salaries and health care costs. The union represents more than 5,000 faculty and coaches across the state. State-related schools — Penn State, Temple University, the University of Pittsburgh and Lincoln University — are not affected. The union includes faculty from Bloomsburg, California, Cheyney, Clarion, East Stroudsburg, Edinboro, Indiana, Kutztown, Lock Haven, Mansfield, Millersville, Shippensburg, Slippery Rock and West Chester universities. In many cases, students walked along with their professors, circling campuses, calling for the system to give their teachers a fair deal.

In Other News According to a CNN poll of debate watchers, Hillary Clinton won the final presidential debate, topping Donald Trump by a 13-point margin, giving Clinton a clean sweep across all three of this year's presidential debates. Saudi Arabia has taken the rare step of executing a member of its royal family after he was found guilty of murder. Prince Turki bin Saud Al-Kabeer was convicted in the shooting death of a man during a “group quarrel.” The execution took place Tuesday. The statement did not include any details about the method of execution. In other cases in Saudi Arabia the death sentence has been carried out by beheading. The Cleveland Indians advanced to the World Series, shutting out the Toronto Blue Jays 3-0 Wednesday to win the American League Championship Series. The Indians will play the eventual National League champion on Tuesday (either the Los Angeles Dodgers or the Chicago Cubs) in Cleveland in the first game of the World Series.
