In 2007, Internet2 began operating Internet2 is using optical fiber  for research and education

The Internet2 consortium administrative headquarters are located in Ann Arbor, Michigan, with offices in Washington, D.C. and Emeryville, California

Internet2 increases its speed from 100 Gb (gigabits per second (100,000 megabits per second) to 8.8 TB (terabits per second(88,000,000 Mbps).

Connects over 60,000 educational, research, government and institutions, from primary and secondary schools to community colleges and universities, public libraries and museums to health care organizations.

The purpose of Internet 2 was to provide high speed access to digital images, video and audio in addition to text based material.

created to make a faster alternative to the Internet. Users of poor quality libraries can now download not only text but sound recordings, animations, videos, and other resources, video conferencing ..Neurosurgeons can now video conference with other experts in the field during an operation in a high resolution format with no time lag.

Aimed to provide fast access to Digital Library Learningware Tele-information Virtual Laboratories

The Digital Library A digital library is an application that will electronically represent books, periodicals, papers, art, videos and music. No need of going to the library. The virtual library gives any kind of information in our fingertips in our computer… even in our mobile phones Because videoconferences are in multiple locations, control over attendance and things going on outside of the call are not easily controlled. There are many places that people would rather be than a room looking at monitor. Pac Bell Knowledge Website: http://www.kn.pacbell.com/wired/vidconf/instruct.html People have uses video over the years for one purpose, watching; not interacting.. Since television began, people have used it just to watch something, to be entertained, to learn about something. People have to learn that videoconferencing is only useful if it is an interactive experience. Videoconferences that are long in duration may ‘loose’ viewers as viewers equate videoconferencing to watching a television program. This will take time getting people used to it. In order to facilitate productive and interactive videoconferencing sessions, the latest technology will be necessary to allow for uninterrupted broadcasts. For this to happen expensive equipment is necessary by both sides of the conference. Automated tracking cameras, TV displays, electronic whiteboards, speaker systems are just some of the equipment necessary. And most importantly, the appropriate communication speeds are required to moving the data quickly. This is extremely important in both business and classroom setting. Learning Ware Learning ware is a distributed environment used for instruction and research. Eg.Virtual classrooms .

Tele- immersion is the most exciting aspect of Internet 2 Will allow people from geographically diverse locations to communicate in real time

Virtual Laboratories Virtual laboratories are realistic lab surroundings that will allow universities and other institutions to avoid the cost of building brick and mortar facilities. Virtual laboratory in conjunction with tele-immersion will allow people from all over the globe to work on the same project simultaneously http://nsd.polycom.com/products/LOOKAND1/New/VPN_sol_guide.pdf

The future of Internet 2 Internet 2 is a remarkable improvement of the present internet The creation of Internet 2 can be used not only in the advancement of university research but also in the medical field. With the use of tele-immersion specialist from around the world can assist in medical procedures and research. Such collaborations will greatly benefit our society as continue to make strides in the world of medicine.
